He has as much value in those situations as Cano?  Kimbrel?

Did you know that one metric had an Oriole player as the most valuable baserunner in MLB last year?

It wasn't Mateo...

Yeah, but don't you know that that guy was supposed to be sent to AAA when he was struggling early last year??

Jorge Mateo is part of this team. He has a role to fill. He adds as much value to the team in late inning, close game situations as anybody else on the roster. If he performs well at the plate, and earns starts, it is just a bonus.

Deal with it, haters.

Or keep crying.

Your choice.

You compared him to pitchers.

Are pitchers not on the roster?

I don't expect you to actually read what other posters say but I did think you might read what you say.

I know if I had one position player to rely on in a late inning close game situation that I would not pick Mateo.   I don't even think I'd pick him for a key stolen base, I'd be too worried he'd get himself picked off.

They have no impact on Mateo being on the team or not.

That's just bitter hating.

Look I get it, but you wouldn't pick him over McKenna? Not many teams have a guy even as good as Mateo on the bench for the hypothetical situation you describe.

I'd rather not pick either him or McKenna.

I want as many of the guys in Norfolk, that have been putting up numbers, in the majors as possible.

I don't think there is enough value in a late inning stolen base threat to warrant a roster spot in today's game.

I can't really argue with your last point. I think mostly they just think he's more valuable than McKenna and will thus replace McKenna's role on the roster. Whether or not that role is needed, like you say, is another story. But it is what it is, he's on the team barring a last second trade. The Orioles clearly value keeping as much depth as possible, even when it kind of absurdly limits their ability to run out a championship caliber pitching staff, because they just don't want to trade anybody. We could have and should have beaten the Cease offer, but here we are.

    • I have two tickets to Game 1 of the WC which I cannot use due to work travel.  Section 352, row 4, seats 9 & 10.  Asking $70 total for the two.  Paid $205 to the Orioles as a season plan member.   PM me if interested.  Paypal preferred.
    • Can't make game 1. I'll be at game 2...last time I was at a playoff game at Camden, we beat Scherzer and the Tigers.
    • He should be taking fly balls all winter.
    • That was a lot of fun. Felt like there are certain elite seasons that had to be part of the team, and then tried to build from there.  Outfield depth is a little shaky, as is the rotation — though the latter is probably mostly unavoidable. The lineup would rake and the bullpen would shove, so pretty happy with this combination.   C 2022 Adley Rutschman (5.4 rWAR) 1B: 1998 Rafael Palmeiro (6.3) 2B: 2005 Brian Roberts (7.3) 3B: 2015 Manny Machado (7.5) SS: 2024 Gunnar Henderson (8.9) LF: 1999 Brady Anderson (5.9) CF: 2021 Cedric Mullins (5.9) RF: 2008 Nick Markakis (7.4) DH: 2013 Chris Davis (7.1) Bench: 2003 Melvin Mora (4.7) Bench: 2006 Miguel Tejada (4.5) Bench: 2011 Matt Wieters (5.2) Bench: 2001 Jeff Conine (2.9)   SP: 2000 Mike Mussina (5.7) SP: 2007 Erik Bedard (5.7) SP: 2019 John Means (4.4) SP: 2002 Rodrigo Lopez (3.7) SP: 2010 Jeremy Guthrie (4.5) RP: 2016 Zach Britton (4.1) RP: 2023 Felix Bautista (3.0) RP: 2004 B.J. • Gray started off well  but then ran out of steam a bit. He's not getting any younger. I was interested in him last year but I think the Cardinals overpaid and his contract only gets worse.
    • A bit. Nothing life changing, but the format seems…Cleaner.
