Bad bullpen management tonight aside, the real problem is that Hyde hasn’t been able to wake his team up from whatever the hell is going on in that clubhouse, and that’s on him. A lot of the depth has been sapped with the injuries, but this goes far beyond that. 

Sure but that stretch also included three 4 game splits against CLE, BOS and HOU so it isn’t like there have been no quality wins.

O’Neil is batting .317 / .432 / .733 vs LH pitchers this season. There is no way in hell you let him bat against Akin in the 10th inning with a base open. Even if the intentional walk puts the go ahead run at 2nd you cannot let him swing the bat.

Not in this lifetime. 
 

The fact that Hyde let Akin pitch to O’Neil in extra innings in the middle of a pennant race is a borderline firing offense. It’s an Ubaldo over Britton level of incompetence.

They’ve been a .500 team for 3 months. That’s been with or without the young guys, with Burnes pitching well or horribly, with Gunnar hitting well or slumping, with or without Rodriguez and Westburg, with or without the TDL acquisitions. It hasn’t mattered who’s healthy, who’s hitting/pitching well, or even who is on the roster the last 3 months.

They’ve played well below their talent level regardless of who is injured and that’s a reflection of the manager.

Not me. I wanted to explore trades for anybody. I even suggested a Basallo for Miller swap. I still want to trade Kjersted, and would be happy to trade anyone.

And i blame Hyde for not using his pieces well. His usage may be forced on him by the Overlords, but if not, it’s all on him.

He said he didn’t walk him because he was worried about Refsnyder pinch hitting next even though he hadn’t been used as a PH against Perez.

It’s one thing if it was the 12th or 13th and you’re out of options. But come on.

Also, once the Holliday error happened, you just can’t let Akin pitch to O’Neill who clobbers lefties. Yoshida is terrible against them. It was a no brainer. 

I really don’t understand Hyde’s logic. Yeah, too many defensive miscues tonight and once again piss poor hitting with RISP. But Hyde isn’t helping with these other decisions.

And after a while, pointing out various reasons why the team loses, such as weak defense or benig short-handed in the pen, even though legit, begin to sound like a tired excuse. Problems like the infield flubbing easy plays or having the wrong relievers on the mound in crucial situations--seems solvable, not something wildly, mysteriously beyond one's control.

You dont walk the winning run to second. Holliday mucked it, it's not on Hyde.

      Very dismayed that we're trying to win this season with unproven players like Holliday and Mayo plugging gaps. Very glad to have picked up Rivera  (+151 OPS as an Orioles) and Slater has a much-needed .354 OBP, plays a reassuringly fine LF, and is a good baserunner. I hope that the defensively versatile, LH-batting Livan Soto proves to be yet another surprise--his limited MLB stats show it's possible.

      He had several hard hit balls in Boston, not all for hits. Including one to RF that would have been a HR nearly anywhere else.

      I've always been an Urías fan, even during the fall-off in home runs last season. The defensive versatility, strong reverse-split stats (105+ vs. RHP, 90 vs. LHP), ability to make contact according to the game situation, and sneaky power. Loved the 2020-22 seasons he had with us and so was mystified at how quickly some people were ready to bail on him.

      So I’ve been puzzling why the defending international League/AAA Champion Norfolk Tides (90-59 in the 2023 regular season) have struggled so much this year (66-78 with a week to play).   Is it the fact that most of last year’s top hitters are either out of the organization or spending large chunks of time in the majors?   Maybe a little, but that’s not the main reason.   Simply put, last year the Tides allowed the fewest runs in the league (0.64 runs/game below league average), and this year they’re allowing the most runs/game in the league (0.43 runs/game above league average).   That’s 1.07 runs per game worse than last year, relative to the league average. Even then, it’s a little hard to pin down. The Tides have principally relied on six starters who’ve made 107 starts, and five of the six have been solid to above average.  The only exception has been Justin Arbrueater, who leads the team with 25 starts and 112 IP, but has a brutal 7.75 ERA.  The other five sit between 3.32 and 4.34, in a league where 4.84 ERA is average.   Interestingly, the major league starters who’ve pitched rehab games did terribly there for the most last. Means 6 starts at 8.68 ERA, Kremer 3 starts at 11.42, Bradish 2 starts at 5.40.   Lots of other guys who made 2-4 starts did poorly.   Bullpen guys who’ve been particularly bad at include Kade Stroud (7.11 ERA in 35 games), Nick Vespi (7.36 in 27 games), Wandisson Charles (8.42 in 25 games, and Kaleb Ort (12.08 in 14 games).   Carlos Tavera pitched a mix of starts and relief appearances to a 7.47 ERA. Overall, it’s been a tough year for the Tides staff even though several starting pitchers had solid seasons.
