Westburg/Urias activated

With Westy and Urias back neither Holliday nor Soto will/woud play much the rest of the season or in the playoffs.

O's Spring Training should be interesting because all 4 of these players will probably be there.

Liv Soto looks like a better defensive 2B than Holliday at the moment.   Holliday has the higher ceiling which will hopefully be realized at soon point in the future.  But Westy and Urias both can play a good 2B.

Let's be honest, if Holliday isn't who he is, he's going down and Soto is staying up. Soto had some professional at bats and is versatile.

I agree the best 2B/SS/3B starting combination right now is Westburg, Gunnar and Urias. Soto provides more value than Holliday as a utility/backup infielder. Holliday is the future, but not this year.

I don't understand a new thread on this today.   These moves happened yesterday morning and they played in yesterday's game.

No one started a transaction thread for these moves so I thought I'd stick one up for someone who may have just perused the board for news.

Sometimes our community sticks these in other threads and I think moves should have their own thread so people can discuss or at least get the news.

My apologies if starting the thread seems unnecessary to you.

It's likely that Holliday's playing time will be limited in the playoffs.  Come opening day next year, Holliday needs to be starting every day.  Next year needs to either be his year to make it or fall on his face.  If the O's aren't committed to him, they might as well trade him this offseason for some pitching.  One thing I've noticed is that even though Holliday's stat line has been awful, he's gotten a good amount of production when he finally gets a hit.  Sort of an anti Cowser in that he gets his hits at the best times.

There was one, it just didn't call out Urias/Westburg by name:

Holliday has more value in the playoffs in my opinion as a pinch runner which is why he is still on team.  You are not going to pinch hit for guys starting now except maybe O’Hearn for a right hander, or Mullins and Slater platoon type thing.  Soto brings good defense but not a huge upgrade over Westy or Urias who both are above average defense guys.  The one place that either is below average is Urias baserunning and a place you might need a guy to go 1st to third or score from second late in a game which Holliday is much faster then Soto.

Fair assessment. Soto did play well but the speed is there from Jackson.

That's not a very helpful title then. When I glanced through I didn't see Westburg and Urias' name. Appreciate you at least starting one but I did not see it.

I didn't start it, and I think the title was formatted in the mold of several other recent threads called "x date roster moves" or something similar.

But you're right that the title doesn't capture the significance of getting these two back in the lineup, and because of that some folks might have missed it. There's more to chew on here than "Bryan Baker optioned, Nick Vespi recalled." 😁

    • It was…and they have had multiple bs game changing calls. It’s a real problem league wide.
    • Actually not all the other WC teams are struggling right now, because right now Detroit is a WC team, and they are very much not struggling - thanks in large part to the O's. Slate is wiped clean in the playoffs though.  At least that's what we're all telling ourselves, LOL.
    • Given the constant talk about the Rangers and Dbacks 2023 runs, how they ended the season poorly and then went nuts in the playoffs, I thought it would be interesting to revisit each of their last 10 games of the regular season. The Rangers went 6-4, and went into the postseason on a 1-game losing streak (which happened to cost them a division title).  They were a 90 win team overall. AZ went 4-6, and went into the postseason on a 4-game losing streak.  They were only an 84 win team overall. The O's in 2024 are currently 2-2, with 6 games to play.  All I know is I would feel a whole lot better going into next Tuesday having gone 4-2 in the next six, rather than 2-4.  For one thing, it would mean we actually won a series against a winning team (even if its one that's not really trying IE if the Yanks clinch, I'll take it).  Four more wins would also put us at 90, which would be a nice round number and nice to put up back to back seasons of at least that number. Going in worse than AZ did last year would be a tough sell for me, optimism wise.
