Orioles need Alonso, Cinci needs Guthrie - let's make a deal

I didnt say he was Guthrie ...Without looking at a list of available guys I came up with a name you could sign to be a backend starter to justify trading Guthrie for Alonsoor some comparable and a couple other players.

Marquis would be a 5.00+ ERA with a 1.40-1.50 WHIP in the AL East. That is NOT a suitable replacement. At all.

I'd trade Guthrie in a heartbeat if we could get a legitimate elite first base prospect like Paul Goldschmidt in return. No disrespect to Yonder, but Alonso is not that. If we're going to basically take a flier on someone to be our first baseman next year, why not keep Guthrie and sign some former top prospects to minor league deals and hope one of them is the next Carlos Pena?

Basically, is Alonso + FA back-of-the-rotation guy really any better long-term or short-term than Guthrie + Josh Fields/Andy Marte/Josh Whitesell/etc.? I don't think so, personally. Guts is worth keeping around for a little longer in my opinion. It's not going to be easy to replace what he brings to the team.

Anyway, this is all a moot point anyway. We can't trade Guthrie at the deadline this year because we're gonna need him to pitch for us in the World Series...

Alonso is better than the guys you mentioned because he still has potential. Guthrie should be traded while he still has value. There's no way it's a good idea to extend him for what it will take in the mid 30s. The other part is ..is the return more valuable than the supp picks? if baseball fixes that part of the draft which is clearly broke the value of those picks could drop.

The CBA is a good point, as it expires on December 11th and the new one could revamp the compensation rules. I kind of doubt any changes would apply retroactively, but you never know. If they eliminate compensation, which is on the table, the calculus on pending free agents swings much more towards trading.

I agree...I'd like to see them allow comp picks...just limit them.

The Orioles have a habit of not taking advantage of the system in place and then whining about it. This team was a cash cow and then got money scared so they complain about the RS and NYY payrolls. Then Tampa gets good cheap and through the draft and we end up with 2 picks to their 8 and now THAT'S unfair.

There is no way a good team should have more picks then bad ones. Then it can never be equalled out.

I'd like to pat myself on the back for this one :) Loved his hit/power combo when others considered him an old strikeout-prone bat last year. Dude can hit. I was pulling for him to be included in the Reynolds deal, which would have made my offseason.

It's nice to hit after so many misses :)

      Also I'll say this regarding this offense, and maybe it's just me... I feel like we've faced some really, really good pitching.  I don't have the time to research the teams we've faced and where they rank on the pitching spectrum, but I feel like we've seen some teams dealing really well against us.

      Expectation is everything. If you dropped this exact team into 2021 the board would be saying this was their favorite team ever.

      Fortunately, we now have xBA, which eliminates having to guess in babip is due to bad luck. His xBA is .199

      I think it's one of those things where the sum is currently greater than the parts, and because of that it's hard to see how we continue winning at this pace given all the struggles in the lineup at the moment.  IF (and I realize it's a big if) but IF Urias, Cowser, Hays, Mullins, McCann, and Santander to an extent, heck and even Henderson lately,  don't start hitting better it's hard to see us continuing on that incredible 107 win pace.  That's quite a few holes, or semi-holes, in the lineup to overcome.  We can't count on a Westburg hit followed by an Adley homerun in the 9th every night to win games when the offense is comatose for 8 innings.  Now clearly if the starting pitching keeps performing the way they are then we will need to score fewer runs overall as we will be giving up fewer.  But I'm not sure that will happen.  Just as we are hoping some of the hitters get back to their career norms, it's also possible some of the pitchers revert back to more normal levels, and not the incredible pitchers they have been.  Combine that with all the injuries (Well, Grayson) and recovering injuries (Means, Bradish) I'd be a lot more comfortable if the offense was clicking on all, or at least more, cylinders.   I'm super jacked about the record, and the pace we are winning at.  I've been HUGELY enjoying watching Westburg become this budding star, seeing Adley hit so well, and have loved being wrong about my expectations for O'Hearn, Mountcastle and yes, even Mateo to this point.  But we DO have some real issues that need addressed, or else I'm afraid we are going to fade seriously in the next 3/4s of the season.

      Just going by the eye test, I haven’t seen him get “unlucky” on hardly anything he’s put in play, let’s put it that way. He’s been horrid.

      Yeah it’s basically a recap of the first month of the season that includes interviews with some of the TV/radio guys and a few players. Westburg featured prominently on that front, with a little McCann and Cowser mixed in as well. Also Grayson. Nothing groundbreaking but a worthwhile watch, especially on an off day.

      I enjoyed it though I have to admit I don't remember much of the first one.  I just finished the second.  Lots of small little interviews and thoughts from different guys as they run down the season up until the 2nd game of the Yankees series.  See some behind the scenes stuff like Cowser and Jackson going behind the monster to sign it.  If you've got 40 minutes to kill, it's fun as a big O's fan.
