I'd be absolutely thrilled with this pick. To me Gausman is the #1 guy in the draft. Keith Law also likes him a lot.

Here his full writeup(I don't know how much non-insiders can see so sorry if I'm restating it)

"Baltimore is looking for the best player available; that could be Gausman, who I currently have ranked as the top pitcher in the draft, or Correa or any of the players named above, although the Orioles are not really linked to Giolito. "

I personally like the idea of drafting a college arm that could help us pretty soon. It took Matusz one year in the minors and then he got called on up. Following a similar recipe (if everything goes well), that could be huge if we could nab someone like that again to come on up next year and provide depth.

Might just be me, but Brian Matusz is not exactly my standard of a successful Top-5 draft pick.

You prefer Hobgood?

I prefer Bundy (Giolito), Machado (Correa), and Wieters (Zunino). j/k :D

If Gausman's still on board, he'd be a fine pick. I just disagree with the logic that "Brian Matusz's fast track to Major League success" should be justification for anything.

Picks in the 4-6 range of the MLB draft are far from sure things.

    • I think Kimbrel would have gotten the final out and it was a cheap call. But if this happened to the Orioles my biggest complaint would be don’t spot the other team a six run lead going into your last at bat. And hearing Yankees fans seethe amuses me when they still celebrate this play in their team’s history.
    • What is Elias thinking about fixing our bullpen?  Does he think because we won 101 games last year that he doesn't need to do anything now?  Is he going to to wait until we are 8-9 games out in August?
    • I think the problem there is Houston is only 4.5 games back of the division, and compared to other teams with similar records (STL/Helsley like I mentioned) are a legit title contender if they make the postseason. Unless they implode I think they will be buyers vs/ sellers if anything.
    • I wouldn't be opposed to trading for Ryan Pressly. He's having a down here with Houston but I think he's better than he's been pitching plus upcoming free agent next year. He shouldn't cost much.
    • Yes, if it were up to me, I would change the rules so that on an infield fly with interference called, the ball is dead and the runners go back to their original base.  So Vaughn would be at 2nd, and whoever was at 1st would stay there.  Not because he wasn't trying to advance, but because the play needs to be called dead due to runner's interference and it doesn't feel fair to call him out for that, when the fielder doesn't really need to field the ball to make an out.
    • We do have different definitions of extension.   Means will be a FA after the season.  An extension is any contract the keeps him an Oriole instead of becoming a FA IMO.  One year or more.     Heck the O's may have extended Coulombe when they gave him an option year for 2025.  Its an extension if they pick up the option. If Means goes FA then he signs with the O's that is not an extension.   That is signing a new contract.
    • The 2nd paragraph is what I’m asking about.  You would just keep Vaughn at 2B, which is no penalty at all on that play because he wasn’t trying to advance.  Right?
