I think Dan Duquette has done a great job, but...

DD keeps saying it and a lot here keep ignoring it - we're going to need money to sign our own. Davis, Wieters, Chen, even Machado are going to get expensive in the next few years. And this is by no means a large market team. The play it safe strategy is a good long-term one for competing.

Oh, you think the budget SHRUNK under DD?

Come now. That's laughable.

I didn't say that.

AM was ideologically opposed to the Buscone system. I think that even if he had more funds available he would not have participated greatly in the LA market. He made a nice fit with an owner who didn't care for spending large sums of money on very young players with dubious track records.

My guess is if PA would authorize the spending then DD would have been trading for other team's pool money.

Right because the $1,959,400 that the O's originally had in their pool would severely hamper them going forward.

Well, as long as you admit this is all pure conjecture.

AM improved the international situation of the Orioles- greatly. DD seems to be following in his same path. Those are the facts.

All else is conjecture.

It is also a fact that he was opposed to the Buscones. Of course that doesn't prove that he wouldn't have spent huge sums of money if directed to.

Yeah, he said something very similar to what DD said about the Dominican system.

The FACT is they treated/treating it exactly the same.

I read that MASN contract doubles in 2014 to 51.7 million, which would be more than half of this year's payroll.
National television fees shared - Each team shares the money paid by ESPN, Fox, and TBS. The contracts that will go into effect in 2014 should pay out $51.7 million - which is reported as more than double what teams presently get. Let's estimate $25 million for this past year and the upcoming year as well, which could be a little high. There is probably an additional amount shared for mlb.tv subscription fees.

That is the National deal, not MASN.

I was really hoping you had stumbled upon some unknown MASN info.

Sorry, your right, I went back and reread it.

But, lets look at it this way, 51.7 of national tv money, and now throw in the MASN numbers. If the estimated numbers of 49 million is correct. Wow. Thats 100 million right there, not to mention any other source of revenue.

Dang, thats allot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I disagree.

If you have the means you are generally better off buying quality merchandise.

Sounds like you are assuming Duquette has access to $$$ he isn't willing to spend. If you were referencing the ownership, then this is an appropriate assumption.

    • Here's the thing about Hyde pulling Irvin with only 75 pitches, according to his comments after the game... In previous games it was mentioned that each reliever is told who they might be facing prior to the game so they could prepare. Hyde said he had the middle of the order coming up and it was the 7th inning. Essentially what he was saying was they were sticking to their script no matter what. And personal conjecture: The last strike thar Irvin threw to strike out his last batter was a cookie right down the middle and it just happened that the batter wasn't looking for a fastball so he froze up. I think that Hyde saw the location of that pitch and it also contributed to his decision. Now it doesn't mean I agree with it because I thought we could have at least preserved Danny Coulombe for tonight's game if we had let Irvin try to get through another inning. He was doing great. But whatever. Hyde knows what he is doing and the victory is all that really matters in the end. Irvin gets a W on his resume and the Orioles gets a team win. There's nothing to be upset about with that.
    • I don’t know how half the people on here watch the games or follow the team between the worrying and negative Nancy’s.  We give up a run early the game is over or as soon as the lineup comes out declaring we just punting this game.  I have learned with baseball more than most sports you never know what will happen.  Your 26th man on the roster might get the huge hit to win the game.  In basketball your 10-13th man on the roster might get a few minutes in garbage time but never really change a game.

    • Your poll is now at 114 - 1. No serious discussion is warranted here.
    • This is why it’s smart to wait until closer to the trade deadline to buy bullpen help. It may be more expensive, but you have a much better idea of what kind of pitcher you’re trading for and what help you need. Relief pitchers are just so volatile from year to year. If we would have tried to trade for Scott during the offseason, we would have had to overpay thinking he could be the same guy as last year, and then we’d be really disappointed with the way he’s pitched so far this year. I enjoy all of these different trade scenarios, but I’d have to see a relief pitcher pitch well this year before I’d be willing to give up anything close to Povich. Povich himself could end up being the help we need in the bullpen later in the season.

    • O’Hean said as much to Roch a few weeks back.   “When it’s mentioned that O’Hearn’s numbers against left-handers aren’t strong, with a career .171/.244/.297 line and five home runs in 194 plate appearances, O’Hearn says, “My career numbers overall aren’t great. Not just against lefties.”” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/this-that-and-the-other-1-52#:~:text=297 line and five home, last year%2C” he said.
