JJ for Ethier would cripple this team.

I doubt DD is that stupid.

I don't think it necessarily would cripple the O's, particularly if there is $ coming back to Baltimore.

The difference in 2014 between Johnson and Ethier is likely only about $5M. Then in 2015-2017 the amount is largely negated by Markakis coming off the books. If you can get them to throw in $6M or so a year over the last few years it could be reasonable, particularly given the insanity of contracts being handed out this offseason.

And now this:

Wow...that would really suck. I wonder if we might see something done very soon on this?

Peter Gammons in 2013 makes me laugh.

I dunno, Britt also seems to be hinting that a non-tender is a possibility.

Also, it's hard to argue with anything that Gammons wrote:

Now, clubs are reluctant to go to eight figures on closers, so even though Johnson has 101 saves and only 33 walks the last two years and is a giant clubhouse presence, he is virtually untradeable, unless Johnson shows up on the Dodgers? Amazon wish list; And here is another problem: the two options should they dump Johnson are Tommy Hunter and Darren O?Day, against whom opposing lefthanded hitters had .857 and .922 OPS numbers. Yich. Maintaining the ability to compete in the American League East on a lower middle class payroll is getting increasingly problematic for the Orioles.
