While Markakis may not like it, I believe in terms of value he is behind Cruz, JJ, and Miller. In some ways you just flip salaries between Nick and Cruz. Nick is more or an $8m per year guy while Cruz is more of a $15m per year guy.

Can someone explain to me what deferred money is?

Hardy won't receive 6.5 million of the 40 million until some prearranged later date. For instance Vlad deferred five million of his salary from his last season. He will get 2.5 each in 2015 and 2016.

It is a way for the team to spread the risk out.
