Mychal Givens

Givens is going to have to find a way to be more effective against lefties. Doesn't he kind of have a change-up? Maybe he should develop it and his slider could be better, too. Fastball is electric, though. He has allowed

runs in two of his four appearances this year and lefties are 5-for-6 against him with three doubles.

We have some interesting characters in the minors that could help the O's bullpen at some point - Miranda's a lefty who could be a long man. Maybe Gunkel from the right side. Richard Rodriquez looks solid. Chad Roe will likely get opportunities as long as he does well in Norfolk. And Mike Wright might make the most sense.

I don't think it's a coincidence that all four of Givens strikeouts today came against right-handed hitters. I still have a lot of questions about his ability to consistently get out left-handed hitters.

So our 4th best reliever might not be absolute lights out vs both sides of the plate.

As the Fangraphs piece CoC shared said, he'll likely always be more dangerous against righties as most RHP tend to be. That's not really a huge knock. And as good as he's been in his short career, slightly worse against LHB is still pretty darn good.

o

(vs. ROYALS, 4/23)

Perhaps his best (and most important) outing of the very young season.

He entered the game with the bases loaded and 1 out, with the Orioles up by 4 runs. He struck out 2 consecutive batters to end the inning.

Then he got the first 2 outs of the next inning before giving way to Brad Brach for the final out.

4 up, 4 down.

GIvens would be the closer or closer in waiting on many major league ball clubs.

We really have four guys with closer stuff on the team: Britton, O'Day, Brach, and Givens. Four guys that pound the zone and miss bats. It's a nice problem to have.
