But the double play would have been impossible after a HR.

So the walk was not as bad as a HR.

As far as Britton (and Oriole fans) are concerned, it was.

You didn't know that a double play was coming, and one swing of the bat would have tied the game.

I agree with Palmer.

Gotta go with SteveA on this one, especially because Britton is a groundball pitcher.

It didn't prove him wrong.

The tying run stepped up to the plate.

The fact that he hit into a double play doesn't take away from that fact, and that was Palmer's point.

So, a single is the same as a home run too. A double must be really damaging. [emoji3]

Hmm.

Single = walk when no one is on base.

Walk = HR with a two run lead.

Double = 1.41 singles according to RPA.

So a double almost ties the game if you round up!

Now that I think about it, maybe you guys are right.

If the previous batter would have homered, there only would have been one out, and Butler's out would not have ended the game.

I suppose that the assertion was typical "tough love" from Palmer (towards any current pitchers, especially Orioles pitchers.)

There's no doubt that a walk is not good, but neither is any other play that gets a runner on base in a 2-run game.
