October 25th

Another day, another win for Peoria!

DJ Stewart (DH) - 2 At bats, 0 hits, 2 walks, 1 strike out

Austin Wynns © - 3 At bats, 0 hits, 1 walk, 1 run, 1 strike out, 1 double play grounded into, had 2 stolen bases on him by 1 player (1 was on a change up in the dirt) and caught 1 runner. Had several stops on pitches low in the dirt and saved a few wild pitches and passed balls.

Adrian Marin (2nd) - 3 at bats, 0 hits, 2 strike outs, assisted in 1 double play

No Orioles pitchers were in today. Peoria won on a walk off grand slam with Wynns on second.

Defense continues to be the strong part for the Orioles players in the AFL, while the offense continues to struggle.

Well, today (October 26) is easy.

Peoria played and lost. Not a single Orioles affiliated player played. It should be noted that todays game IS on a Wednesday, when "taxi squad" players are eligible (and usually) play.

It will be a few days before the next update as I have surgery tomorrow and don't know when I'll be back on.

Bridwell replaced Liranzo. Good luck.

I've been to several dozen AFL games over the years and this was a first for me -- no O's made a game appearance; that is, unless you want to count pitching coach Justin Lord's consoling mound visit to one of the several inept pitchers who mistook the game for batting practice.

The game was played at Sloan Park -- the 2 year old spring training facility for the Cubs. The good citizens of Mesa forked over $100 million dollars to provide the team with a very nice replacement facility. The stadium seats 15,000 -- the largest in the area -- and it usually sells out for spring training games. There were less than 400 at this game.

It's a beautiful setting with raised bleachers way back beyond the berm ala the seating on private properties across the street from Wrigley Field's bleachers. Apparently, they depleted the construction funds before installing the itsy-bitsy unreadable small screen video scoreboard.

It's my second look at the Javelinas this year and I'm going with this guy as likely to make the bigs as a utility player.

They have a couple of good-looking pitchers, but I want to see them another time or two.

Thank you. Everything went better than expected. Going to be a long recovery though.

I'll work on updating todays game and the ones I missed.

How have Yacabonis and Scott been faring of late?

Yacabonis was doing great and blew a save recently. Scott has been ok but gave up two homers to the same player the other day. I'll have those game stats up soon.

Oct. 31

DJ Stewart (DH) 5 ab, 1 hit, 1 k

Austin Wynns © 3 ab, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 k. 1 error (catchers interference), allowed 3 steals to the AFL's Trea Turner and caught Tebow stealing

Adrian Marin (3rd) 4 ab, 0 hits, 1 rbi (ground out)

Jimmy Yacbonis (RP) 1 ip, 2 hits allowed), 1 run allowed, 28 pitches, 19 strikes, 4 groundouts, 6 batters faced

Stefan Crichton (RP) 1 ip, 1 hit, 9 pitches, 5 strikes, 1 ground out

Game notes:

- First error by an Oriole this AFL season

- Stewart was the only AFL All Star from the O's (wtf?)

- Crichton still has a 0.00 ERA

I'll work on the previous games during the next few days, along with some notes.

D.J. Stewart selected to Arizona All Star Team

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/afl/club.jsp?team_id=1311

Is every team guaranteed a participant?
.222 BA with zero home runs. I can't think of any other explanation.

This is some bullsh...

Crichton has been "lights out" and has been the best relief pitcher there.

Stewart has done absolutely nothing impressive or noteworthy.

Please tell me more about Crichton. He's piqued my interest.

Stefan Crichton - 7 games, 8 IP, 1 save, 8 hits, 1 unearned run, 6 k's, 0 walks, 0.00 era in the AFL.

23rd round pick in 2013. Spent 2016 in Bowie. Is a former starter who has good control, who pounds the strike zone. Has a decent fastball and a good off speed/breaking pitch.

Wxpect him in Bowie to start off but don't be surprised to see him in Norfolk and possibly Baltimore by mid-season.

    • Mayo's only use to the big league club right now would be against LHP, where we are kind of struggling (disregarding Mateo and McKenna's outlier home runs for now).  So if we wanted to have Mayo in a strict platoon against LHP, here's a potential lineup: Henderson - SS Adley - C Mountcastle - 1B Santander - RF Westburg - 3B Mayo - DH Hays - LF Mullins - CF Mateo - 2B
    • Irvin vs. Hunter Greene (1-2, 3.63) Means vs. Andrew Abbott (1-3, 3.27) Kremer vs. Lodolo (3-0, 1.88) We haven’t seen Greene before, but Abbott and Lodolo both flummoxed us when we saw them before.  Lodolo threw 6 innings against us in 2022, allowed 1 run on 4 hits.  Abbott allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 6 IP last year against us.  The Reds haven’t faced Means, but blasted Kremer for 6 runs on 10 hits in 4.1 IP back in 2022.  Irvin saw them in a long relief outing last year, allowing 1 run in 3 innings.   The Reds’ offense has been a bit anomalous, 23rd in OPS+ (90) at .674 OPS, but 8th in Runs per Game at 4.84.   The reason for the divergence is that they have been great with RISP at .792 OPS, with only a .620 OPS with the bases empty.  So, they’ve hit when it counts.  Elly De La Cruz (171 OPS+), Spencer Steer (130), Jake Fraley (119) and Tyler Stephenson (113) have been dangerous, but the rest of their lineup has been underwhelming.  The O’s come into the series 2nd in OPS+ at 120 (.754), 3rd in R/G at 5.29). The Reds bullpen is pretty average at a 4.02 ERA, 6 for 8 in save opportunities.  That save ratio is good, but 8 chances isn’t many for a team that’s won 16 games.  The O’s pen has a 3.63 ERA following a strong series against the Yankees, with 9 saves in 16 chances. Overall, it looks like a tight series.  Tbe O’s bats cooled off a bit in the Yankee series and they’ll face three good starters this weekend.  Hopefully the bats can wake up in this hitter-friendly ballpark.  I’m looking for Mountcastle and Westburg to go deep in this series.
    • Basallo hit by pitch and left game last night..was it his R elbow that had the stress fracture in offseason?
    • Elias would NEVER do that deal.
    • Perhaps they are considering giving Westburg time at first.  He is 6'2".  His arm isn't as bad as Mountcastle's but it isn't as good as Mayo's.  He also seems to do well moving around.  That is the only strategy that I can see but that doesn't work while Mountcastle is here.
    • Yeah I guess we'll see soon enough. Sometimes inflammation gets in the way of the testing, so they may want to double check with another test after some of the inflammation goes down.
    • There was no doubt.  Lol
