He made the right decision' date=' Albers pitched terrible[/quote']

I can't really argue with his decision, but I would've let Liz pitch until he allowed a baserunner. I felt that way before Albers gave up any runs, but I don't fault DT for making that decision.

My theory is that 99% of the time, if you're "pinning it" on anybody, then you're harping ;-)

It's completely impossible for DT to do or not-do practically anything without somebody not liking it.

(Not complaining about it: second-guessing the manager is perhaps the largest baseball tradition of all.)

That's fine and all, but I'd really like to know why people think it was the "right" decision, besides the reasons I mentioned and rebutted.

Is Guthrie pitching? Just kidding. Even before Albers gave up 2 runs I thought it was a bad decision to get away from Liz. There was no reason to pull him after 5. Obviously a bad move by DT.

Obviously you are judging by hindsight.

Obviously that's not the correct way to judge a decision.

Our BP has been lights out and Liz had thrown 91 pitches.

Albers had a bad day but DT made a reasonable decision.

Luke giveth the lead, and Luke taketh the lead away...

Yep. Corner outfielders don't study playing the wall the way they used to. Example: Yaz had estimating bounces off the Fenway Green Monster down to a science.

If Albers had had a 1-2-3 inning, I still would have called it a bad decision, in principle. Why was it the right decision?

A young pitcher who has not fared that great in the minors this season as well as having no wins prior to the twins game and a 6+ ERA in the majors does not need to be in a tight game having thrown 95 pitches.

I was noticing that we seemed to have a lot of players around 8-10 HRs earlier this week. I am surprised, because I have been thinking this offense pretty much sucks.

Go O's!

Our offense doesn't suck, they just hit for low average and all go into slumps at the same time.

91 pitches. And he had retired 7 straight. I guess we'll just have to respectfully disagree.

Roberts is really holding his own with Doc

And don't forget what we saw in Liz's first start. When things fell apart for him they fell apart FAST. Three really hard hit doubles in a row. I have no problem with the decision. I posted before the bottom of the 6th that they should be extremely careful with Liz, let him start the inning but be ready to yank him at ANY sign. So I can't disagree with bringing in Albers. The guy has had a great season in our pen, eveyrone has an off day.

As for the "don't overuse your bullpen" argument. Well, you HAD to at least have Albers up for that inning with Liz over 90 pitches. So he was going to use a warmup anyway. A good % of bullpen overuse comes from warming up, not just using guys.

Evidently, he thought he got what he could out of Liz, and that Albers was the better bet. It's not like it's a complex equation, it's just a judgment call.

I don't see what's especially rebuttable about that, it just didn't work out, that's all.

ps: I think knowing when to yank a guy is maybe the hardest everyday decision of all. Every time, it involves a whole lot of crystal-ball about 2 different P's.

    • If he is just playing catch 3 weeks after the injury it seems to be more then minor discomfort or it isnt improving any.  In best case he could be ready by late May early June.
    • Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but we have seen that the AAA to MLB jump is as big as ever.  Also, if you are going to bring him up to the majors, where does he play?  Do you play him at 3rd, leave Holliday down, and then move Westburg to the second.  Do you bench Westburg?  Do you DH him?  He can't play first or OF with current experience.
    • Mayo needs to start getting some OF starts in AAA. They have said that he is shaving fly balls in practice.  Maybe they aren’t ready to put him out there yet but I would like to see them just put him out there. The Os are going to be better with him on the ML roster.
    • He also gave up a solo homer in the first game.  I agree, the grand slam was 95% on Baker for loading the bases without getting an out and forcing Webb in the game. I can forgive Webb for that one.
    • It’s just one series and that obviously doesn’t mean that much but for me, I came away completely unimpressed with that team. Soto may be the best hitter in baseball and Judge is likely to get it going (although the injury issues could be a problem as the season goes on) but the rest of the lineup is meh. They have an excellent bullpen but the starting pitching, without Cole and Rodon being meh, isn’t overly impressive. End of the day, my biggest takeaway is that I’ll be surprised if the Os don’t win the division.  I’m still weary of our pitching, as it stands (assuming GRod is fine), for October but this team is going to do nothing but get more talented as the season goes on. Barring a rash of injuries, if the Os aren’t fighting for the 1 seed, I think it will be a disappointing regular season.
    • He could be the most exciting player in the game right now. He has already stolen 18 bases and he has 8 HR'S. The Orioles need to keep him off the bases and get some outs. He's close to what Gunnar Henderson, when he's in a groove, is for the Orioles. Speed, power, and immense overall talent and fire. I hope the Orioles know how to pitch him, because he can turn a series inside out. https://www.mlb.com/news/elly-de-la-cruz-power-speed-breakout-2024
