Should Akin and Kline move up to get in a pennant race?

I agree, especially given the newfound glut of starters assigned to AA - you’ve still got Brian Gonzalez, but also added Kremer, Tate, Ortiz, and Zimmermann in trades. Hunter Harvey may at some point return to Bowie too. Definitely move Akin up, as there are a couple non-prospects starting games for Norfolk.

I think Kline is probably ready too, and he needs to be on the 40 this winter, so may as well move him closer.

Could also promote Alvarado to Bowie, if you need to fill the rotation. And really, for a likely organizational guy, he has earned a promotion.

Akin was very good tonight.

7IP, 3H, 2R, 2BB, 9K

Got barreled a bit late when his command diminished some. Missed bats with FB, SL, and CH. Changeup is a strong pitch. Might be overconfident in his fastball (or the catcher is overconfident) at times, that's what caused the HR. He had a 1-2 count and had just made the guy look silly on a changeup, came back waist high middle in fastball that he hit the target on but got turned around in a hurry.

The 2 walks were both full count numbers where he tried to get a chase on an offspeed pitch.

Velocity is more 92-95 than the 90-93 it was earlier in the year (according to the broadcast).

He's first in the league in wins now with 11, first in strikeouts and third in ERA. He could be the Eastern League pitcher of the year even if he moves up, unless you have to finish the year there to qualify. I'd like to see him get five starts at Norfolk and maybe a couple in the playoffs.

Woo first in wins.

I've noticed it's not cool to like wins, but I still like them a lot, going back to 71 when we had four with 20.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb to knock "wins" when the guys hasn't allowed more the 2 runs in any of his 11 wins.

I would like to disagree with the notion that CoC is cool.

But wins are a by-product of a lot of things - many - and perhaps most - of which are not under the control of the pitcher.  It's relevance in evaluating a pitching prospect is very little, imo.

Both Akin and Kline should be moved up.  I'd actually move Kline up to the majors now.  I'm not sure there's much of a difference between AA and AAA for a reliever, and he'll soon turn 27.  Let's see if he's an asset.

    • I love the Gunnar signature "I'll do it myself" double play. Plenty of SS will do that on occasion, but he really seems to just prefer to do it all himself unless he really needs to feed the ball to the 2B.
    • I’m still not sure Gunnar had his toe on 2B when the ball finally arrived.  Sloppy toss by Mateo. Gunnar’s subsequent unassisted DP was his 6th of the year, tying him for the major league lead.  He led the majors last year with 13, despite starting only 64 games at short (playing another 19 as defensive sub).   His rate per game of unassisted DP’s is down, but he’s on pace for about 22 which would smash last year’s league-leading total.   Gunnar loves to call his own number.
    • Holliday now has 120 AB in AAA this year: .275/.429/.458/.887, 4 HR, 10 2B, 3 SB. Overall, very good, especially the OBP. But it's hard to learn much from the statline when guys like Daniel Johnson are also lighting it up down there.  What are folks' thoughts on the following: If he continues roughly an .850+ pace, what is the right time to bring him back up? How will Elias know when to bring him up - what is he looking for beyond the statline? Exit velo? More XBH? Some nuanced, hard-to-quantify stuff relayed by AAA coaches?
    • I don’t really follow this.  The O’s are looking to put their best lineup on the field, and to have flexibility.   If the choice is Mayo at 3B with Holliday in CF (Westburg at 2B) vs. Mayo in RF and Holliday at 2B (Westburg at 3B), I might well think that the Holliday in CF alignment is better.  He’s more athletic and faster than Mayo and probably could adapt more quickly.   I’m not wedded to this, but don’t mind trying it out.  And it’s certainly not because I’m down on Holliday.
    • That was actually a very poor play by Cowser.  Firstly, he fumbled the ball in the corner (likely the only reason they even sent the runner) and then he made a very bad throw to Mateo that Mateo bailed him out on by jumping 11 feet in the air to catch.
    • Hi Malike. Are you a NY State Police officer?  I had a SC State trooper as a friend and neighbor. He got sent to Iraq and got killed in action, so unfortunate for him and me.
    • You're right, my mistake. It's 15.
