You are probably right.  He does well at AAA but has not been able to translate that to the majors.

He's hit .300 with an .800 OPS at Salt Lake, but the team OPS'd .841 last year, and they were a .500 team.  You have to take a lot of helium out of those numbers to translate to sea level in Norfolk or Baltimore.  D.J. Stewart's .716 in Norfolk would almost certainly be .800+ at Salt Lake.

I just have a problem with Elias fielding two slow guys in the  outfield of with Mancini and Stewart at the same time.

I can’t see Elias letting a journeyman impact Stewart. This impacts Rickard and may trickle down to Ruiz depending on what type of bench they want.

Well I could look at it as Diaz and/or  Hays beginning  the  season in AA and Young being a stopgap player at AAA until they are promoted.

I would certainly hope they're not guaranteeing a 25-man slot to a 32-year-old who is a low-.600s OPS hitter.  If anyone reflexively knocks 200 points off a Salt Lake OPS it's Mike Elias.

I think we can jump right into the conclusion that it would be embarrassing if April 1st rolled around and Norfolk didn't have enough bodies on the roster.

I also think Elias is doing a science experiement.  He wants to see what it's like for a player to go straight from a 120 park effect to an 80.

      It really shouldn’t have to be either/or.  Plenty of teams have more than one big contract.    Four of Burnes’ years would be before Gunnar is being paid at FA prices.   However, if you start talking about multiple extensions of young players instead of just Gunnar, then I do think choices have to be made as to whether spending on Burnes would preclude that.

      Good clarification.  Thank you. I find it odd though, if the purpose of the 5 options r ule is to keep you from yo-yoing a player up and down too much, that the rules specifically exempts an option from counting if the guy is (yo-yo'd) back up within 20 days

      Haven't read further in the thread to know if it's been noted, but there is a Concussion Protocol List which has a shorter maximum duration than the 10 day IL.   I think it is 5 days?   EDIT:  Having read further in the thread I see it is 7 days. So no doubt the move being made is: Mateo to the CL, with Vespi replacing him on the roster (since Vespi hasn't been down 15 days, he can only come up to replace someone going on an injury list). Norby coming up because we need 13 position players, and a pitcher going.   My guess is Vieira DFA.   It's pretty damn telling that in the post game yesterday Hyde said he had to stick with Tate as long as he did because he didn't have any rested RH relievers in the pen.   Vieira hadn't pitched in 6 days.

      It will be interesting to see how they handle Norby. Norby can play 2B and corner outfield, but he's a below average defender at 2B.  The Orioles history suggest Norby will be a bench guy for now with Urias slotting in at 3B and Westburg at 2B mostly while Mateo is out. Saying that, Norby give the Orioles a good right-handed bat off the bench and a guy who could spell Mullins with Cowser slotting over to CF.  The question is whether Norby will get some Hays PAs?  I'd personally like to just drop him at 2B and keep Westburg at 3B with Urias on the bench, but that would not be how the Orioles typically break in non "impact" rookies.  Either way, this is a well earned major league debut for Norby. Here's to hoping he's given a chance to play a bit.

      I think it’s a fair argument to make about players like Kjerstad. His promotion was questioned at the time as he was raking in AAA and there was not an obvious opportunity to play when promoted. And sure enough he sat on the bench primarily for weeks and was demoted. i think there’s a difference between promoting a player like Kjerstad and promoting a Maton etc. Our top prospects should only be promoted if they are going to get a long leash on playing time a la Holliday (IMO)
