I was thinking the same thing - glad to see him get some hits. I'd imagine it's about time for him to go back to Norfolk.

He hasn't been to Norfolk before unless it was for a college game or as a tourist.

I'd like to see him sent to Bowie once he gets going a little bit here in Frederick.  4 for 28 doesn't do it for me.  I need to see him get hot for a few games straight at least.

Norfolk is full of outfielders at the moment anyway.

He has already done pretty well at Bowie. Some wanted to see him in Baltimore. I just want to see him do well in AAA. Most of the Norfolk outfielders aren't prospects.

He was sent to Norfolk in March:

March 17, 2019 Baltimore Orioles optioned RF Austin Hays to Norfolk Tides.

They aren't organizational players either.  Mullins, Stewart, and Santander could all figure into the future and aren't going to be sitting on the bench if they have to remain in Triple A.

He struggled in Bowie last year even while healthy and has struggled so far in Frederick.  Let him prove himself a little.  2018 is more relevant than 2017 at this point.

Austin has never played in Norfolk.  I believe that 3/17 move was a paper move before they actually assigned anyone to an affiliate.  The actual assignments didn't come until early April and Hays was already hurt at that point.

He has 130 games at Bowie - time to see what he can do at Norfolk, in my opinion, after one trip to Baltimore already and a strong spring training. I'd go Hays, Mullins and Stewart in the outfield with Santander at DH.

I think they want to give him as many reps in center as possible so I fully expect him to be in Bowie next rather than a crowded Norfolk outfield.  He has 130 games in Bowie, but he wasn't very good for half of them and the half he was good was two years ago.  Spring Training means nada.

No reason at all to force a Norfolk promotion.

You think they were going to send him to Bowie for a third year after some thought he made the big club in the spring? I think he was a member of the Tides when he was hurt.

I’m fairly indifferent as to whether he goes to Bowie vs. Norfolk.    For right now I just want to see him start raking at any level, and then they can think about moving him up.    That thumb injury really disrupted him at a time when he had everything working.

He hit .242 with 12 homers and 43 RBI in his bad season at Bowie. I'd take that over what Mullins is doing now at Norfolk.

Mullins' bad season in Bowie was .265/.319/.460 with 13 homers. Came back the next season and put up .313/.362/.512.

Hays has all of the tools and looked fantastic in spring training, but he hasn't shown sustained success above Frederick. I'm willing to bet his a fixture in the OF going forward, but he needs to put up some results.

He also didn't exactly dominate AA either. A .285/.318/.511 line in 130 games is okay but not outstanding. Let him spend a month down in AA before moving him up to AAA.

He had a .960 OPS there as a 21 year old when he was healthy. That's domination. At any point he has been healthy in his O's career, he's hit for average and plus power. Unfortunately, he can't stay healthy and that's a very valid criticism.

    • Many of Tiger’s injuries were due to circumstances fully within his control.   Just sayin’.
    • I think it is as simple as that they believe until Holliday gets sorted out and returns, his bat on the bench and as a part-time starter makes them a bit better team than their other roster alternatives. Given that you have Santander in the last year of his deal and Mullins and Hays in their last two seasons, you don't really have the long-term outfield depth that would tempt you to move him for a short-term bullpen fix. He likely goes back to Norfolk when Holliday comes up, depending on injuries, if Cowser hits a major slump, how he plays in the part-time role, etc, etc, but they are willing to sacrifice some of his AAA playing time and development to be better in the short term. I don't have a problem with that.
    • Now we’re on to Mateo.  Nope.  My turn to ask the question.   If Mayo comes up and is average defensively at 3B and puts up an .800+ OPS at 3B and Westburg continues to hit and plays 2B what do you do with Holliday short term and long term? ”Last scenario, if he does great on both sides of the ball, what do you do with Holliday for the rest of this season and long term?”
    • No, I don't have Holliday penciled into the HOF. I never said that. What I said is that I believe in his talent. I don't think that many people got it wrong in his evaluation.  I also don't believe that Mayo's defense is anywhere close to good enough to be an All-star caliber 3B. But I do believe that is possible (maybe even very for Westburg). I'm not sure that professional sports is a meritocracy. In that the more talent/ability that you have, the more opportunities that you will get. That probably explains why Holliday got the first crack at the Bigs over Norby (and even Mayo to a degree).  Last thing, right now Mateo is performing best at the other INF spot (second best). Do you want him to stay/get more playing time right now?
    • They will be cautious with Holliday now.  I am sure they would hate to have to send him down a second time.  I'm thinking mid-season for Holliday if all goes well in Norfolk.  If he struggles down there, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, it could be delayed further.  Mayo is destroying the ball and should get the call next.  There is a spot for him at third with Westburg moving to second.
    • IMO we will see a move by June 1st for either Holliday or Mayo (maybe both) as the O’s schedule June to all-Star break is tough as nails.
    • I watched The Crow. Heck of a pinch hitter in the Glory Years - delivered big hits fairly often. Probably gets added credit for tenure as hitting coach. That's all I got.
