My prediction for how the Davis saga ends

I encourage folks to read the whole OP. It's been kicking around my head for awhile and it was nice to get it written out. I'd love to hear thoughts.

I believe something like this is definitely possible, if unlikely. But the ingredients are all there if each party is creative enough and willing. There don't seem to be many positive ways this can end, but this is one.

I read it and it makes sense.  Whether it occurs or not all depends on Davis.

I think it all makes perfect sense. Something I have thought about for a while also. Even if Chris and/or his agent demand every last penny coming, wouldn't it make sense to move him to a role he is perfectly suited for (and one he would, I assume, enjoy) and away from the role that guarantees misery for everyone but his agent?

Great opportunity to turn a huge negative into something of a feel-good positive. Well stated, OP.

Thanks. I agree - he's going to get all his money. And he's going to donate some of it because he does that anyway. Why not make it sting a little less for both sides by creating an official role out of it. That way you're kind of paying him to do something and everyone benefits from the good press. And hopefully, larger than normal charitable chunk.

All the kids can ask him about his PED suspension during a pennant race.  Fun for the whole family.

I'd rather they just paid him to go away.  He can come back in 2032 for the twentieth anniversary of the 2012 season.

I think it's fair to say the PED thing is kind of water under the bridge for most fans considering we know exactly what the substance was and he owned up to it. Who cares at this point?

Just paying him to go away is most likely what will end up happening. But how is it not preferable to use a lot of that money to start something charitable in conjunction with the Orioles?

Charitable sure, as a face of the franchise capacity?  No thanks.

I don't see the need to have Davis acing as a face of the franchise.

When did I say "face of the franchise"? That's not what I was saying at all. He'd have a moment of visibility/press when it kicked off, and then he'd probably be less visible than all of the rest of the current Community Ambassadors save for Eddie who we don't see that often. Show up at the odd event or charity ribbon-cutting, that's basically it. Create a role for him, sure, but I'm not saying parade him around like he's Mr. Oriole.

Thank you for writing this, I think the big problem is “restructuring the contract”. No player or agent in baseball is going to allow for anything that involves Davis taking less than his contract value. If they defer it, they would almost certainly have to pay money on the deferment, which would end up costing the team more.

I think it is impossible for them to recover from the public relations fiasco, so there’s nothing to be gained by keeping him. We can only put it aside and say, “this is a really bad thing we’re not going to do this anymore.“

I strongly feel that the super rich have a Moral obligation to do what they can to help society. I know what I would do, and I am confident that Davis is going to do something as well, but he doesn’t need the team to be involved. Having said that, I agree with your timeline. The team is making its moves and basically ignoring Davis. He is already interfering with the roster, he is already producing nothing, except laughter, so they will release him when they choose to,  But I don’t think it will be the result of any modification of the contract, and I don’t think he’s going to except a position in the front office. He’s the symbol of that stupid past, whether deserved it or not, and keeping him around would be like continuing to meet your ex-wife for lunch every Tuesday for “old time’s sake”

nah.
