Betting against prospects is a winning play.   Too soon for me to make the same judgement on a 24 year old and did some nice things at Norfolk.

Well my feeling is that Someone else will be better. I don’t doubt that he has a good chance to start the season with the big club, even if he doesn’t show meaningful improvement between now and the end of the season, unless Mike goes out and gets a free agent second baseman, and I doubt that will be a priority for him.

And defense is defense, unlike hitting, a batted ball is the same in AAA as it is in the show..

And we have definitive evidence that he's well below average defensively with no possiblity of getting better?

Meaningful improvemnt?   That happens from time to time with 24 year olds, doesn't it?

you and I are not in disagreement. I’ve pretty clearly said that he has every chance of breaking camp next spring with the big club, whether or not he improves meaningfully between now and the end of the season. Defense is one of those things that is basically the same between the minors and majors. If you can’t throw you can’t throw for instance. But I expect he will have next summer to show what he can do. I don’t think he has a future piece, But I never said that he couldn’t be, and we will find out.

Last night, Vlad Jr. hit a ball to the left side of 2B.   To me it was clearly Mateo’s ball, but Jones cut him off and tried to throw while heading completely the wrong direction, and the beefy Guerrero beat the throw pretty easily.

I know the play you're referencing, and to me it's emblematic of what happens when the guy next to you is different every night. These guys never have a chance to learn the nuances/tendencies of the guy playing next to them. Who's your best overall 2B? Who's the best overall SS? Who's the best overall 3B? Can Urias be one of these guys? Jones? Just set an infield and let's see what happens.

I agree that the lack of continuity has been a big issue.

That was just idle chit chat on a message board.   We don't really know.

Elias actually made reference to Jones’ need to stay in Norfolk to work on his defense despite his hot hitting in or around early June, I believe. It was during a zoom press conference and Elias was asked about Jones and why he was not called up. So, the many reporters got that idea directly from Elias. And as we have seen, there are some very athletic glimpses of brilliance, but some clear signs that he is still learning the position. The hitting will come. He just has to get comfortable, and have some success to build his confidence that he belongs.

Oh my god, another error on Jones! I am sure I am missing something because Elias is always smarter than everyone else.

I think he’s playing because we don’t have anybody better, And because they are giving him a chance to see what he can do.

Jones is probably a utility player at best, but I’m fine with giving him time to find himself.

Not comparing the two, but Cal Ripken started out his career ice cold at the plate.

Yeah, I’m happy giving him some time. We gave Chance Sisco about a years worth of ABs, Jones should get plenty as well, although his defense isn’t good enough or versatile enough for a utility guy.

I can understand why Elias was reluctant to call Jones up with his defense even when he was hitting the cover off the ball earlier in the season.

    • Rays are always picking up these relatively low rated prospects and a lot of them turn into something.  Like when the O's traded Tobi Wells (??) to the Rays and they turned around and traded him to the Guardians for Caminierio (sp?) and he's now a top 5 prospect.  Wells is still floundering around in the upper minors last I heard.
    • Civale has some value at 1.5 seasons left.  He also gets out of the AL East.  I expect we'll see some positive regression for him.  He's a fine regular season #4/#5 type.   We need to start thinking of arms, especially SP, as regular season guys that can get you through a 162 game season vs. guys you want being one of your 3 playoff SP.   Irvin, Suarez, Povich, Kremer, and even McDermott, are fine regular season options to get us through 162.  This year and next.  Couple those names with re-signing Burnes, along with a healthy Grayson, and with this lineup, you're going to win 90-100+ games a year.
    • He didn't appear very "rangey" when he was up but he made the plays he should have in a small sample. There were several balls he didn't get to that I thought Mateo would have. I think Norby has been playing LF in AAA.
    • Is Norby that limited defensively? I like his hitting approach, but didn’t really see enough of him at 2B to assess. He’s also limited by only being able to play second as well, correct?
    • To that point, one area where Jackson has made some progress is on high velocity. AAA average whiff % for pitches with velo 95mph or higher= 25.6%. Jackson Holliday AAA performance vs pitches 95mph or higher   pitches JH Whiff % Sept 2023 43 38.1 Mar/Apr 2024 23 33.3 May 2024 52 25.0 June 2024 24 20.0 However, his overall whiff rate has consistently been ~27% over the first three months of 2024.  Additionally, about half his batted balls continue to be hit on the ground vs 42% AAA league average.
    • He's got an outside chance of ending his career with the most strikeouts ever by a RP. That might help his case. Kimbrel threw 77 innings in 2011 with Atlanta.
    • A .919 OPS doesn’t even scream out anymore.  Lol
