So what does Garcia have that Ellis did not?

I have not looked myself, so it’s a sincere question, but Ellis was credible in his time with Baltimore. It is curious why they did not think he had enough potential to keep..

For one thing, the ability to be stashed in the minors without taking up a 40-man roster spot.

Well someone suggested that he will probably return to us in January or February, so that’s OK. That might’ve been the logic in the decision first place, free up a 40 spot, and he’ll be back

We’ll see.   I’m not too excited about Ellis, because his MiL track record suggests that his good results for us in 25.1 IP were a SSS fluke.   His 5.22 FIP also suggests that.   I’d welcome him back but I’m not losing sleep over us taking him off the 40-man roster.

When Colorado had him repeat the Eastern League in early 2019, he let up 41 hits in 68 innings.

That AA half-season cherrypick is familiar to me as Baumann 2019 (45 hits in 70 IP), and Bedard 2002 (43 hits in 68.2 IP).

But then promotion to mile-high elevations, utter ineffectiveness and TJ, so who knows what's left?   5-9, 201 on B-Ref maybe a bit of a rarity for a pitcher.   "Small" right hander Jean Pinto listed 5'11, 175.

That’s an interesting comment, I have wondered forever why guys like Nolan Ryan and Fergie Jenkins would throw 330 innings like it was nothing, and now we’re happy if a guy gives us 150. In a way, those old hard throwing guys were like Stradivarius or Guarneri or Bergonzi Violins:  knowing as little as they did, they still made masterpieces, And all the knowledge we have today doesn’t equal what they did.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nolan Ryan could throw six reasonable innings right now.

This fascinates me as well.  I have a degree in Exercise Science and am a certified strength & conditioning specialist, so I at least have some knowledge of biomechanics and such.  With all the high-speed cameras analyizing every millimeter of body movement, supercomputers performing analytics, advanced nutrition, and year-round periodized strength programs...you would think pitchers would become bulletproof.  Exactly the opposite.

I love the nerdy stuff that I mentioned above.  Do you know what else I love?  My 1993 Toyota pickup truck.  On paper it is nothing special...actually quite underpowered.  Everything is mechanical, with very little electrical.  Yet my Dad owned it for 20 years (before I bought it off him) and it spent most of it's life hauling firewood out of the woods for his side business, and he taught all 4 of us kids how to drive and operate a stick shift with it.  Nearly every part is original except for the usual wearable things like brakes, belts, water pump.   The original clutch still grabs like new after 180,000 hard miles and 4 kids stalling it hundreds of times while learning to drive stick.  Now that I bought the truck off my Dad I take it on offroad trips throughout Texas and the Southwest, never worrying about it breaking down.

Sometimes simplicity works better.
