Creed Willems 2022

Paul in Virginia

Recommended Posts

He threw out two, allowed one SB, and went 0 for 4 at the plate.   He came up twice with a runner on 3B and less than two out.   First time he popped out to 3B.   Second time he hit a grounder to the 2B, who made a bad throw home and the runner was safe but Willems was not credited with an RBI.

Let's give the young man a little time to get acclimated. I know everyone here is interested in him, but's its unfair to focus too much attention to every at bat and every situation this early in his career.

I'm just happy the young man is getting his opportunity and hopefully he'll make the most of it.

I don't think anyone said anything remotely negative except the guy (Tony) who said we should give him more time.   lol

The only negative thing (if you want to call it that) Tony said was that it was a worrisome sign that he wasn’t signed to an affiliate at the start of the season, particularly considering the unimpressive alternatives.   That’s not really related to how we judge him now that he’s up.

In any event, the two caught stealings in his first game was a very nice start.   That was more informative to me than his 0 for 4.

I didn't say it was overtly negative.  I used the word remotely negative.   He did say that if a 19 year old in his second year after being drafted couldn't make a full season team to start the year then he probably wasn't a real prospect.   He insinuated that Willems wasn't good enough to beat out to non-prospects in Hernandez and Mantecon to make the Delmarva club out of spring training.    I didn't go back and re-read his comments but I think that's a pretty fair description.

Adam Hall and Ryan McKenna did not make full season clubs the year following when they were drafted and they were second and fourth round picks respectively.  Both ended up becoming decent prospects.

Not that they've amounted into a whole lot, but one is in the big leagues and the other is likely to get a taste at some point.  Those are just two recent examples I can think of.

Not breaking in with a full season club as a 19 year old isn't necessarily a death sentence.

Hall is a Canadian and didn't have a ton of experience.  It would have been an upset if he had made a team.

Not sure he's a good comparison.

Well, you are preaching to the choir!

I believe Hall played on the Junior Canadian national team and had some experience in international tournaments so I'm not sure he didn't have as much experience as your typical HS draftee (maybe more) unless we are only counting HS kids who played on the showcase circuit which I'm not even sure if Willems did.

Do we know how long Creed has been catching?  A few years?  His whole life?

Lots of reasons someone could be held back.
