Going to be even worse than usual this year, with the team clearly actually looking to upgrade some roster spots (and it not just being the hopeful overoptimism of our fan base), and having very little committed payroll.

DeGrom has a one year left on his contract at 30.5M.  Plus a club option for 32M.   He has averaged 13 starts per season over the last two years.   Why would he opt out?  Unlikely he can improve on the 30.5m at this point.

If he opts out he has a good chance to be the most expensive player on any teams IL.

Get real. He’s guaranteed 30.5M this year.  If he doesn’t opt out and has a career ending injury the Mets can decline his 2024 option.  Some team will guarantee him a minimum of 3 years at 30M plus, and probably more years than that.  He’s a huge risk. He’s also the best pitcher in baseball when healthy, has pitched over 200 innings 3 times, and ended 2022 healthy and effective. Why would he opt out?  Seriously?

deGrom seems way too fragile for the money you'd have to pay. I say no would rather have a 40 years old Verlander on a one or two year deal. And I'm not even sure if I would want Verlander depending if younger pitchers are available.
