I have no way of knowing this, but it seems as though there's really not anymore money available for the 2023 team in comparison to the 2022 payroll. Everything that has been done so far has been an equivalent to '22. Any talk of escalating payroll has been kinda walked back by accounting for arb increases.

There's still a plenty of time to prove me wrong but I just don't believe ownership will be willing to let payroll get too high.

How can this be true that there is no money? They have been stashing ALL of the profits for the last 4 years. If that is told to me, I would really struggle to believe that.

"Allowing payroll to be too high" what does that mean? We are already at the bottom and have been so 4 YEARS RUNNING. Where is the budget surplus from the last 4 yeas when we paid nothing for the major league on field team?

It's one thing for ownership to say we don't want to spend. It's another thing for somebody to tell me that they can't spend, epscially after spending nothing for so long.

I think I'd rather sign Sean Manaea and I really don't want Sean Manaea.

This or if we have offers that aren't immediately dismissed  I would guess they are competetive offers but maybe less years than the player was hoping for.  If they can't find a team willing to stretch further then maybe the O's offer gets accepted.

I hope we eventually find out who we actually made concrete offers to. That will tell me a lot about how to feel about the current regime.

I wondered at the deadline this year if Elias was being overly cautious and methodical, and I'm starting to wonder that again. Probably unfair, since there isn't much track record to go off of yet, but I do wonder. It would be gratifying to see him do something to support the idea of pushing for a playoff berth in 2023. I know it's only December, but things are moving fast and it just feels like the O's are getting left behind again. Hopefully he has things in motion that will bear fruit soon.

To be clear, If the O's wind up not making a major signing, I think the true fault would lie with ownership, not Elias.   I can imagine ownership telling Elias that he can't sign anyone costing more than X, but he needs to at least look like he's trying to keep the fans placated.

I don't think that could be determined without more details on the offers as my sense of Elias is that he's disciplined.  If he thinks a player is a risk worth taking up to X years and Y dollars he's not going to stretch past that.  I think he would walk away when bidding exceeds that even if ownership was not micromanaging individual signings and he had the budget availabe to cover stretching past it.

Problem is, Rodon's consistency is nowhere near comparable to Judge. He's got some Robbie Ray risk. If he reverts to his career norms, he's not Chris Davis-level bad but he would be a severe overpay. I would be thrilled to get him, but he's not a sure thing by any means.

He's had two straight years of elite stats.  I look at that as more he's figured things out rather than a potential regression.  Injury is obviously a concern, but I'd say if he's on the mound he's a pretty safe bet to perform well.  I'm also more willing to give 5 years to a starter that's just entering his 30's than some of the mid-30's guys.

Well but then you have Elias confirming they have multi-year offers out for several players.

I hope you are right.

I don't think they need to get crazy this off season with the money anyways. I'd be more happy with some trades in order to open up some room for the guys that need to graduate from AAA.

Right now though, the only money spent has been a wash fromast season.
