RH - Negative for cartoon wall

SS/2B/3B - we trot out GG level defense already with 4 guys in the MLB now. Ortiz doesn’t hurt that.

Not on the 40 man.

All this adds up to him likely being dangled the most as he’s having the best AAA performance and is expendable. The other prospects fill holes or line up as replacements for current mlb’ers.

Cowser - RF

Ortiz - Frazier

Kjerstad - Santa

Mayo - Mountcastle

Holliday - Mateo

Basallo - Adley 😢

So that leaves Westburg, Stowers, Norby, Prieto, Beavers, Fabian, Haskin, Wagner, and Willems, as our trade bait.

I can't wait to trade Westburg for the Cole Irvins of the world

They’ve been blocking him all season. The O’s have developed into a good team, so I’d say they don’t suck at talent evaluation.   They may be too conservative with promotions.

How does other people having good seasons excuse the poor call they’re making on keeping Mateo and Mountcastle in the lineup every day?

Because Elias isn’t making his judgment based on 1-2 cold months.  Mateo was worth 3.5 rWAR last year and is on pace for 3.3 rWAR this year.   He’s been in a deep freeze for a month, but his history is that these come and go and that the value he adds defensively and by offensive contributions when he’s hot outweigh what he subtracts when he’s cold.   That calculus could change if Mateo stays ice cold for another few weeks (especially if the team plays poorly offensively as a whole), but Elias and Hyde aren’t ready to pull that trigger yet.  (Parenthetically, Mateo has shown some signs of snapping out of it the last 5 games or so, getting hits in 4 of those games and only striking out twice.

As to Mountcastle, he’s also extremely streaky and June has generally been his best month.   If he has another mediocre month like the last two, I could see his time getting cut, but I doubt anything significant happens before July 1.

Generally speaking, GMs and Managers are more patient with their players than many fans.   I’ve been posting here 20+ years and the conversation we are having right now about these two players has been raised 100 times before with respect to various guys.

Is this hyperbole or a joke? If so, I missed it.

If not, who would Westburg’s trade value be that low? Hernainz was able to acquire Cole Irvin by himself. He was our 20th ranked prospect at the time I believe. Westburg is currently our 3rd ranked prospect and a borderline top 50 prospect in the game.

Only 100 in 20 years?? 😁 I reckon more.

Who’s talking about 1-2 months? Other than a 3-4 week stretch each of the last two years, Mateo has been an awful offensive player. His defense has also not been as good as it was last year. He doesn’t have to be benched, but they need to find a way to get some young prospects into games, especially when they’re on the type of hot streak that some of our guys are.

As for Mountcastle, he’s been getting worse every year in MLB. He has no plate discipline, and has been worth an astounding 2.7 fWAR in over 1,500 PAs. He’s definitely shown he’s not a full time player and it doesn’t take Sig’s computer to tell us that.

He also has had a mild case of Mountcastle-itis. He's hit a few decently that were caught. I saw some frustration after one to the warning track.

I was kidding, but Elias is not really made a trade yet to add to this team that has been good.

Another double for Westburg. Slugging over .600 through a 225 PA sample size at AAA.

This is the highest slugging percentage of his career at any level on record--including college and summer leagues.

Call. Him. Up.

No room for him. We have 2 MIers that can’t hit well, a third baseman who struggles vs lefties right now and other mediocre players getting at bats but Westburg isn’t good enough to beat out any of them.

And, none of it should matter because the team is winning.

And yea, that is the completely idiotic reasoning by some on this site.

You forgot that minor leaguers should be treated as chess pieces by the front office and made to wait until they're 30 and if it suits the suits.

In all seriousness, I don't think this has necessarily become an organizational problem just yet. And if Westburg gets the call by the ASB, I guess it's fine. But only in baseball would a highly-touted athlete in the form of his life still be on the practice squad at 24.5 years old.
