At Double-A Bowie’s media day, Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo said he’s prepared to play first and outfield this season, trying to create opportunities for himself. Manager Kyle Moore said outfield will come later in the year: “His ceiling is so high as a third baseman.”

Coby is a big dude.  Wonder if his future is corner outfield anyway.  Might be hard to move Gunnar off of third anyway.

I watched a couple of innings and missed this!  He made a good play coming in on a slower GB making an accurate throw on the run.  It wasn’t the highest level of difficulty but still good to see him make it look routine.

This report from BP Paternostro is the first time I've seen the artistic description "as wide as the batter's box":

Coby Mayo, 3B, Baltimore Orioles (Double-A Bowie)

The Orioles don’t lack for young infield options, but Mayo is one of the more intriguing bats left in the system. He generates easy power despite using almost none of his lower half, due to using almost every inch of the batter’s box with his wide stance. His upper body-heavy swing still generates plus-plus bat speed and good whip, and Mayo adjusts and covers offspeed pretty well for a power over hit prospect. He can spoil stuff with two strikes, and while there is still likely to be above-average whiff here, he might not strike out as much as you think. Mayo does have a bit of an all-fields approach at present and while the power can play line to line he may be more of a 20+ homer guy rather than 30+ unless he starts emphasizing his pull side pop. The raw power supports that possibility though.

In the field…well, Mayo might not have to worry about trying to supplant the Orioles young infield options for long. He’s not the rangiest and doesn’t have the best footwork at third, but he’s playable there, despite it looking awkward at times. The arm is plenty strong enough, but not as accurate on the move as you’d like. He might end up a better fit in right field, although his foot speed isn’t ideal for the outfield either. The offensive tools should land in the 55/60 range in time, so perhaps the young infielder Mayo will end up overtaking is Ryan Mountcastle. —Jeffrey Paternostro

We are just absolutely loaded with enormous power bats.  Mayo, Kjerstad, and Basallo.  That's not even counting guys like Westburg and Stowers.

Mayo laser bomb.  Was just noticing how he legit has one foot in front line of box and one foot on back line of box.  Crazy bat speed. 
 

Edit: double.  3rd base umpire have HR sign.  They overturned to to a double.  Absolutely smoked nonetheless.  Quick bat

Coby just crushed a shot out in bowie....two run homerun.  Scores Heston.  It went out in a hurry to left fied.  Pulled and just over the wall.  Went out like a missile.
