Jud Fabian 2023

It’s still debatable as to whether Fabian has enough contact in his bat to play at the ML level. 25% K rate at Aberdeen. 33% so far in limited ABs at Bowie. He’s doing other things well (power, patience) and seems to be a very good defender in CF. Can he cut down on the strikeouts enough to be a regular in MLB?

Jud's strikeout rate has been a conversation going back for years now, and it is well known that he has made big strides there.

His k% on this season so far (27%) is what Cowser/Mayo posted for all of last year. Were they not considered MLB regular material?

Fabian is in a bit of a funk, 3 for 30 in July so far.

Like Fabian, McKenna also had a pretty weak showing his first taste of AA as a 22-year-old. I sort of see them as similar players.

I'm not too worried. There's a pretty huge gulf between Fabian's numbers at Aberdeen vs Bowie, and I expect he'll adjust eventually. Might just need to cook for longer than we're used to these days with everyone shooting through the system.

His AA strikeout rate is obviously way too high right now, but it's also obviously very early. And more generally, the mid-season jump to AA by a second-year prospect is probably the biggest adjustment possible. The competition really ramps up from A+ to AA, and on top of that in the midst of your longest season ever. For Jud in particular, this has always been the level that would really test him since SEC baseball is sometimes equated to high-A ball. An adjustment period should absolutely be expected here.

I suspect Jud would be a high-level left fielder if he has to move off of center for Bradfield. His CFer speed/arm/breaks would be well suited in Walltimore.

There’s exceptions to everything.  I think they taught Cowser and Norby and even Ortiz power but it certainly makes it easier if it’s already there.
