Spring Training Recaps

McDermott had one of those weird spring training outings where he got pulled with two outs and bases loaded one inning, then got sent out to pitch the following inning.  Keegan Gillies got the O’s out of the bases loaded jam McDermott had left behind, which was largely the result of two walks.  Not the best outing for him, but at least he recovered in his second inning of work.

I’m enjoying seeing some of our less-heralded minor league pitching prospects like Stallings, Armbruester and now Pham having some multi-inning success in the early going.   Hopefully that jump-starts their minor league seasons this year.

Thanks for these. One thing I am gathering from all of these games in Spring Training so far is just how important defense/feilding is to winning. The Orioles have been better fielders than their opponents so far and it's been showing up in win/loss column.  Looking at the errors of the opponents, it's hard to win when you drop or miss the ball in big situations. On the other hand, if a team plays great defense, they win championships.

A good piece of homework that sounds like it’d be right up @Frobby’s alley would be to figure out the worst defensive World Series winner in the past 30 years and exactly how bad they were.

Awww, Moose, you know I can’t resist a Bat-signal like that!

Judging by Rdrs and Rtot, the answer is the Derek Jeter Yankees: -45 Rtot in 1996, -22 in 2000, -20 in 1999.  Only about 8 of the last 30 teams were below average defensively by these measures, and most of those only slightly.  Those Yankee teams were the three worst.

Gotta like that Derek Jeter lead teams were the worst defensive ones!

All by himself, Jeter was -14 in 1996, -11 in 1999, and -23 in 2000.   So that 2000 team actually was +1 other than Jeter.

Such a joke that Jeter won so many Gold Gloves. He's a good example of why that award is actually mostly an award for offense in disguise.

Yeah, but Jeter was always diving for catches, so he was great on defense!
