Cowser is in the lineup vs a RHP the day after an off day.  I think this is a good sign the Orioles may be moving to a platoon now.

Of course the Pirates are scheduled to start LHP the next 2 days, so we probably won't know for a while and this may also have influenced the decision to start Cowser today.

Probably still won't go to a platoon.

I hope Cowser nukes a baseball today. So far he's making the most of his opportunities and he just needs to keep his foot on the gas.

I’m just happy that Hyde keeps clarifying that anytime Cowser gets into the game, it’s to give a starter rest or because someone is sick.  We don’t want to hurt the ego of Hays.

Ohhh if Hays strains his ego he could be out until the ASB.

I used to really like Hayes as a player but at this point imo the O's have to move on.  Either he is hurt (a lot) or sick or most importantly he goes on a tear for a week or 2 and then doesn't hit for 2 months.  His defense is ok, but no where near worth keeping some of the youngsters off the field.

No opposing pitcher is afraid of Austin Hayes.

IMO you move him (and Urias) for whatever you can get, release Kemp/Mateo, and start playing the players that are actually going to be here for the next 6 years and can actually win you Championships.

Through 9 games….about as cold as can be:

81.4 Average EV

2.9 Launch Angle

15.8% hard hit rate

He has no where to go but up….but starting this cool, he should get some days off.  There is no reason he should be playing everyday.

You liked him so much that you don’t even know how to spell his name!

Hays had a very up and down year last year after June.  From July 1-aug 16, he was a 550ish OPS guy.

From Aug 16- Sept 12, his OPS was 933 and then he ended the year, with a 530 OPS in 58 PA. That doesn’t include the 3-11 in the playoffs (3 hits coming in one game)

So, over the course of his last 85 regular season PA,  he has a 132/224/211 slash line.

If you go back to July 1 of last year, he has 298 PA, his slash line is 214/279/354. That’s a 74 wRC+.

But sure, he should play everyday.

Ive said it before but it bears repeating. For all the praise we heap on Elias for being brilliant I've yet to see any explantation for the unwillingness to move on from players. It's almost his kryptonite.  I know some will point service time manipulation but I dont think thats an explanation for Connor Corby in his 3rd year at AAA.

Asking this genuinely. Is the plan to have Mullins and Hays stayy through the end of 2025? Then start to give playing time to the prospects?

Promoting players hurts the minor league ratings. If Mayo, Heston, and Holliday all lose prospect status their minor league system probably falls out of the top 10. Its a dumb conspiracy but it feels true at times.

Hell look at 2022. Westburg and Stowers were ready to come up, they stayed in AAA. They could have came up and developed at the MLB level when we "weren't" trying to win (though we should have.

He greatly values depth.

It’s almost like he’s worried to rely on the farm system he did such a great job building.

    • Wow. “Near-ready starter” and consideration in the top 100 based on a breakout in 17.1 IP in AA as a 25 year old? I’d love to see it obviously, but that seems really going out on a limb. Young hasn’t pitched nearly enough in his whole professional career to suggest he can hold up under a full SP workload, or sustain this velo bump. I’m excited for Young and this only reinforces my thought that the Orioles might have something here, but my hopes are still just for a healthy season and maybe he becomes a RP option in 2025.
    • Yesterday Max Bay was Eno's guest.   I'd known the name as Eno often described him as the mathy co-parent of Stuff+ but it was new to me in the video he'd been a 1-time member of the Astros analytics department.
    • It’s starting to feel like if we don’t get Gunnar signed, the rest of it won’t even matter. We have a lot of good players and several that are extension worthy as has been outlined in many posts. But Gunnar is in another stratosphere even from the best of the other guys. The talent, the results (already, not to mention the likely improvement or at least potential for that in the next few years) good health so far with the body type that should maintain - the kid is an outright superstar, and I just don’t think that is true of the rest of these guys.  I love Westburg, Adley, Colton, Jackson, Grayson. Hell I love this team. But Gunnar is The Guy and it’s not even remotely close.    Surely there is a Boras client in the history of Boras clients who has signed early?  Give the dude a blank check as far as I’m concerned.
    • I'd target Westburg first.  He should be more amendable and affordable and might serve as a sign to his teammates that the O's are serious about keeping a core together for an extended run.
    • Bradish is an excellent #2 with injury questions. Grayson has to show that he can be counted on to be a #1 or #2 over the course of a season and into the playoffs. Kremer is a solid #5 starter. Means has not been able to start and finish a season healthy. I would probably prefer a pitcher with a more reliable/available track record. Cheap shouldn’t even enter into the equation with a payroll this low and a team with this kind of potential/talent/aspirations.  We will most likely need 2 starters in the rotation next year (if we do not resign Burnes who is a bonafide #1 IMO). I don’t think that we are going to “cheap” out way to a World Series. The competition is too good/talented AND historically speaking teams with low payrolls haven’t won a title all that often. In the last 20 years, HOU was lowest (their first WS title) with a payroll ranked 18. We have some work to do just to get that payroll output.
