What date is that? I feel they both may.

Holliday has already had 34 at bats.  I'm not sure home many plate appearances he has had.  Likely 40 or less.  Plus there is the 45 games limit.  The club won't be able to bring him up before early September.  The usual 4t days/129 plate appearances apply to Mayo.  He won't be able to be promoted until the second half of August and, will need the occasional, day off to stay under the rookie limits.

I don’t think they are linking it to any dates like qualifying for rookie of the year.  I think they would prefer to bring them up when they feel like they are here to stay.  They also  will have to move on from somebody like Urias and/or Mateo.  I just think they aren’t ready to remove that veteran presence yet.  Injuries could change that or a trade.  There is no doubt in my mind Mayo would be on this team if his defense was considered good enough.  I am sure they are working on that at AAA everyday.  He doesn’t have anything else to prove offensively.

The move to make is Mayo for Urias. The only concern is that if Mayo flops defensively then who do you go to?  Urias would have to be traded or DFA’d. Westburg would be here obviously.

I think bringing Mayo up is the right call. Just pointing out the flip side of the discussion. Mayo offers too much to keep him down. It’s a move to win a WS.

If Mayo flops defensively then you put Westburg at 3rd with Mateo at 2B. If one of them gets injured you bring up Norby. We have more than enough redundancy at every IF position. Playing Urias (and his .625 OPS) is unacceptable when Mayo is basically putting up

Aaron Judge numbers at AAA.

Sunday Night Baseball at Camden Yards would be a pretty cool time to debut Mayo.

Didn’t they add Norby to the taxi squad for that?

I’m guessing if Hays isn’t able to play the move is Hays to DL, Mayo up.   Then, you let Urias and Mateo ride the bench.     OF is Cowser, Mullins and Kjerstad/Santander.  You can find plenty of at bats for everyone and rotate DH to keep people rested.

But then you don’t have a backup 3b. If something happens to westburg, you push Gunnar to 3rd, Mateo to as and don’t have a 2b. If it’s an injury, you make a roster move. But if something happens mid game, you have no utility player

    • I almost think Crochet should get his own thread as he’s monopolized this trade deadline thread.    my .02 cents. I doubt Elias will pay the price it will take to get him. He’s proven repeatedly he’s pretty conservative when it comes to trades and will not pay the overpay Getz has shown he wants for his players.
    • I don't know much about the Padres' market. Those other teams have much higher revenues than the Orioles, enabling them to bid higher. Sure, at any time some of them will  be limited or even disabled by existing payroll obligations, luxury tax concerns, or an unwillingness to spend because they don't think they're competitive. But all of them? The Dodgers are going to tell their fans that they really wanted to sign X to lead their pitching staff, but they got edged out by the Orioles? Maybe. I don't know much about the Padres' market. The Cardinals, despite being based in a small city, have two things going for them that give them revenues of a mid- to larger-market  team. (I think comparing revenues over a period of time is a much better way to measure teams' financial wherewithal.)  They are (1) a huge regional market that goes back over a century, with a size and strength that no team other than possibly the Red Sox has been able equal, and (2) the fact that St. Louisans (and people from that area) are crazy about baseball, I believe more so than any other city. St. Louis is a small city, but the Cardinals do not share the characteristics of a small-market team.
    • I think it was Andy MacPhail who said grow the arms and buy the bats.  The O's had some bad luck with that strategy when guys like Adam Loewen and Hayden Penn were derailed by injury.  Obviously others just never panned out.   But I'm thinking they never took the strategy to its potential when they chose not to target and develop players from the Caribbean countries -- pitchers or position players.  Not to say that strategy definitely would have worked out if they had a greater presence in the Caribbean then, but they must have missed out on many promising arms.
    • I think Scott McGregor, right now, may be a better starter than Irvin.

    • It's been disappointing how Dean has pitched in his rehab starts, but sometimes you gotta give a guy the benefit of the doubt and just assume he turns it back on when he's back up here. I think he's earned that, and I'm not even the biggest Kremer guy.  I say call him up, chuck Irvin in the pen, and go from there.
    • Kremer can stay at Norfolk for the rest of the year if that is what Elias thinks is best for the team.   His rehab can go until July 15th.   And he can be optioned to Norfolk if that is the right thing to do. The question in front of Elias is:   Is Kremer ready to be a better starter than Irvin?
