Per Jordan, O's Won't Sign 6th/Anderson & 7th/Bywater Round Picks

Hopefully this will be like Givens last year and we still get them but you have to wonder why...My guess is these are the types of players JJ talked about before...Guys whose demands have gotten crazy since they drafted them.

Do these guys pocess enough of an upside that their draft status will go up substantially over the next year to rounds 1-3?

I don't remember much about Bywater but Anderson, I believe, was looked at as more of a reliever in all likelihood...probably a guy who could move quickly if you put him in the pen. So, maybe some team would value that type of player in the 3rd/4th round next draft and he could get some more money...But how much more would he be getting and would that be enough to justify the risk?

Of course, if the kid wants to go back to college, then so be it...but we all know this is about money moreso than the desire to go to class.

Hard to say. Anderson is a local kid, grew up just on the other side of the hills from Berkeley. For whatever reason, he may like the idea of sticking around for another year.

And given his stuff, he would probably consider his career somewhat a disappointment to this point. If he can put it together in the Cal rotation next year, his stock would rise for sure. More money!

Oh come on guys...we all know that if the Orioles put the money on the table, that he would be signed.

The way negotiations generally work is that both sides have a price point so in a sense that is true. However, you and I don't know Anderson from Adam. Maybe he is the first in his family to go to college, and promised his Mom he would graduate. Maybe he just loves college and would rather put off the real world for a year as a big man on campus rather than riding buses for the next 3 years. Maybe he has a deep-seated fear of Baltimore and would never sign here. You are a very black and white guy and as an outsider to negotiations we just don't know and it is silly to speak in such certainties.

Why would he make himself eligible for the draft(actually, he may be automatically entered, not quite sure how it works for baseball) and enter into negotiations if that is what he wanted all along?

We never heard that was supposed to favor college or that he had strong desire to go back to school, even if we paid over slot, did we?

What we do know is that Anderson was taken in the sixth round, was rated near there, etc, presumably wanted to go pro.

JJ makes pretty fair offers, IMO. JJ offers what he believes guys are worth and does not try to short-change anyone. JJ has a track record of signing most every player he has wanted - especially the college ones. I can only think of two unsigned college kids from the first 10 rounds and one of them, Salem - 10th round a few years ago, changed his bonus request post-draft. Last year there was one that JJ took a risk on to see if the signing bonus request would come down and it did not. In his time here in Bmore, JJ has shown a pretty good feel for the signing bonus market IMO.

And JJ made it seem like the same thing happened this year..[erhaps he was talking about these guys?
