Hernandez and Mickolio Watch

I thought it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to tracking these guys' success this season and possibly in the future.

They both turned in a scoreless inning today in the first ST game of the year. (Yes, baseball is officially back!)

I really hope these guys can reach their full potential and have successful careers. They seem to be great kids, and I wish them nothing but the best.

Hernandez has done reasonably well although I saw one outing where is control deserted him. Mickolio has been is inconsistent old self and looks in danger of not making the team. Of course, I think he's out of options which should work in his favor. Although a lot of top prospects play in the Arizona Fall League it's still questionable what kind of barometer that league is. Mickolio dominated there this fall after an awful year. Looks like he couldn't carry that success over to ST. As I've said before with Hernandez, he's a very good arm but he'll never be elite without better command overall and especially developing consistency with his slider. Right now, he's nothing more than a decent setup guy with potential.

Actually Hernandez is having a good spring. The hitters are hitting .053 against him and that hit was a broken bat single. He has given up just 1 run in 6 innings of work.

David Hernandez will serve as one of the set-up men this coming season. Mickolio claimed the final spot in the bullpen.

Good for Kam - but when I read this (a few beers down the road) I thought you meant that he would be the closer - ya know final pitcher to pitch...:o

Hernandez facing the meat the Cardinal's order last night and went 2 innings gaving up 2 hit and no runs. Also had 2 k's including blowing fastballs by Matt Holliday at 95-96mph!

DH has 0 ER in 5.2 innings with 5 K's

Mickolio has 5 ER in 5 innings with 6 K's

Sounds about right ;). I'm rooting for DH to be an elite setup/closer guy for a long time (even though it might make our Reynolds trade look bad) but for Kam? I'm just glad we got something for him when we did... I could really care less about his future.

And Mickolio was optioned to the minors following his disastrous start.

Gotta wonder what in the world AZ was thinking by trying Mickolio as a starter. The guy's mechanics can get out of whack in the middle of a pitch.
