Our own Stotle recommends this read.

Interesting that they make a point of noting his poise which is at odds with some of what DrShorebird said.

Hunter pitched very well last night. His pitches are fun to watch. His pitches move about very nicely. On the negative side, I was surprised at his immature reactions to what may have been missed calls by the ump. He comes from a baseball family and his father was an All Star pitcher, surely they must have taught him that showing up the ump will not help him get close calls in the future. When you stand on the mound and throw your head back and arms down in "disbelief" you don't make a favorable impression on any one. The ump handled it well even though Hunter did this on multiple occasions during the first three innings. Hunter is a competitive kid, but he must become a competitive man. On the positive side, Hunter handled the HR off him very well and it did not appear to affect his pitching.

Interesting note Doc. This is something that I'm sure he will be talked about by the coaches. Please let us know if you see anything like this in his future starts.

I think there's a difference between showing disappointment and letting that disappointment affect your performance. I think the second one is what they're talking about with "poise," the first one seems like a little different thing. Maturity, maybe?

Definitions vary.

I would consider his reported actions concerning umpire calls to be both immature and lacking in poise.

I would just have a hard time using "poised" to describe a pitcher who is visibly expressing his dissatisfaction on the mound about not getting calls.

Deferent observers have different opinions, as well. I don't think Mellen was there, but was rather conveying thoughts of scouts in attendance (per his write-up). So Doc and those scouts may view the same actions differently -- for the scout(s) it was not a big deal; for Doc it was noticeable enough to be noteworthy.

Doc puts a lot of weight on those sorts of things, maybe moreso than a scout would, unless the scout thought Harvey was intentionally showing up the umpire, as opposed to not being aware of how his body language looked.

I remember that after Bobby Hurley's sophomore season at Duke, Coach K had a video made of all of Hurley's whiny expressions after foul calls/non-calls, and showed it to Hurley, following which he pretty much stopped doing it. Sometimes players don't realize how they look until they see it for themselves.

Oh sure. I didn't mean to imply one interpretation was right or wrong (of course, how could I since I wasn't there). Just noting that might be a reason why two folks watching the same thing might report it differently.

I wasn't reading any implication into your post. Sorry if it seemed like I did.

Very nice outing tonight by the young Harvey.

6 innings

1 hit

0 r

0 er

1 bb

7 k's

And it was in a pitcher's dual with Giolito. His line:

5 innings

2 hits

0 r

0 er

2 bb

6 k's

I like the potential competitive spirit!

Edit: Anyone on hand with some observations??
