Should the O's fire Jim Presley?

Too soon to consider a move like this, IMO. It's not like the offense overall has been awful, despite our pathetic BB rate. After a poor weekend, we are now 8th of 15 AL teams in runs/game, which is not good but not a firing offense at this stage of the season.

10th in wRC+ with a 92. Not good at all. Of course, blaming the hitting coach that a bunch of guys who don't take walks aren't taking walks is silly.

Yes you make my point. It's better to walk than to hit.

Last in the majors in walks. Seems like the organization needs to make some kind of statement that they care about BB's P/AB and OBP. It's clear that the players and Adam Jones (as team leader) don't give it any priority.

What do you think that Jim Pressley is doing to keep the batters from walking?

He's telling them to look for a pitch that they can drive. That way madness lies. He should be telling them to look for a pitch they can take.

Tearing the cover off the ball is overrated, and a waste of energy. Leave the bat on the shoulder.

There is no trade off between plate discipline and power production--just the opposite, in fact. If you don't swing at balls, then sooner or later pitchers will have to throw you a strike. If you swing at anything, then sooner or later pitchers will stop giving you anything good to hit.

A hitting coach can't do anything about Adam Jones and JJ Hardy's plate approach, but he can do something about Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop. What we've seen so far is not encouraging--plate discipline looks like the major weakness of their offensive games.

Exactly, you don't want to hit. If they aren't good pitches to hit, they are probably balls, the very thing you are looking for. If they catch to much of the plate you just have to foul them off.

I suspect that there isn't much Pressley can do...

but unfortunately there is often a fall guy in a organizational shakeup.... to get the attention of the remaining players/coaches that the hideous plate discipline is not acceptable.

Eventually DD is going to have to trade for and/or the player development staff is going to have to develop players with better on base skills.

Fire everyone. We change pitching coaches all the time and yet the pitchers never go deep. Why does every pitching coach make them have such short outings. I think perhaps it might be the Orioles players.

I blame every shortcoming with the team on lack of talent. Not lack of effort. Not coaching or mentoring.

Drawing grand conclusions based on 29 games is what's silly. If the O's have a 92 wRC+ at the all star break, we can talk.

If you want to fire someone, fire Brady. Ever since he started everyone on BradyCare, we have Hardy pulling hammies, Manny blowing out his knee, Davis with a tummy ache, and Gausman going on the DL after coughing too hard. Its faily obvious that BradyCare is not working for this team.

I think batting coaches are overrated! You can either hit or you can't. You either have plate discipline or you don't. It's up to the player if they want to tinker with their hitting style. They're in the majors for a reason and most of them are so supersticous they don't want to change anything.

Batting coaches are fine for youth on up to the minors.
