He is making a case for next man up...

pretty impressive career 1.099 WHIP in the minors with about 5Ks to every walk. Only downside I see is that he isnt a big strike out pitcher and those types usually get hit harder in the MLB.

That being said, it will be interesting to see what he has. The doesnt seem to be thought of that highly being a C grade prospect and dubbed at a 6/7th inning reliever.

17) Joe Gunkel, RHP, Grade C: Age 24, acquired from Red Sox last spring for Alejandro De Aza, posted 2.68 ERA with 113/27 K/BB in 145 innings between High-A and Double-A, 127 hits. Strike-thrower with low angle delivery, fastball average but mixes in a good slider, may project best as middle reliever but might start if change-up can improve further.

Can he get a solid change down?

With Showalter announcing that Chris Tillman will not be ready for his next scheduled start on Thursday, the case for Gunkel grows a little stronger.

Gunkel is scheduled to pitch for the AAA-Tides tonight.

He is still not yet on the 40-man roster.

The increased strike outs are a plus. That's been the biggest knock on him. However, two of those starts were against Durham. Durham ranks last in the IL in K's and avg. as a team.

The numbers over his last 10 starts have been really good. He might be a good option to spot start just because the scouts don't have an mlb scouting report on him. We've all seen how spot starters dominate us.

Thursday will be Ubaldo in my opinion.

Gunkel is a late-scratch for the AAA-Tides !!!

He could still be going to the bullpen with Ubaldo or - dare I say - Bridwell starting.

There's more of a chance of Bridwell getting DFA'd for Gunkel than there is of Bridwell starting. Lee could easily go on the 60 day DL, but the 60 day DL is a loophole to add players to be eligible for the playoffs if not on the roster by Sept 1.
