Manny still worth 400 million?

Schoop is not on the same planet as Manny. Schoop is an average player so far. His ceiling may be higher than that, but we haven't seen "cornerstone player" yet or anything close.

.266/24/77 .751 OPS. Pretty impressive for a 24 year old if you're not biased by Manny's gaudy numbers.

Do you have yourself on /ignore?

You mentioned Markakis and Davis.

Not in regards to the quality of the player. If we paid Manny 30 million a year that would be 15 dollars a ticket more just to break even. People say pay him ridiculous amounts of money for some unknown reason. Team can't afford to spend 53 million in two players. Well unless you want to spend next 6 years in last place.

One step below A-Rod...or equal to A-Rod if you factor out enhancements (however you want to look at it). As Manny continues to get stronger and figure a few more things out, we're talking about a HOFer.

I think folks forget how fast a young A-Rod was. Manny doesn't have that element to his game.

Team might spend the next six years in last place without him. :noidea:

Manny has so much more talent than Markakis and Davis they are not really even proper comps for him.

By one school of thought it might be impossible to overpay Manny and stay within the structural framework of ML contracts.

In 1988 the Orioles had two hall of gamers in their prime. How was that season? This is baseball not basketball we need depth. Tillman and Britton both signed would be better investment than Manny.

An ARod type would get much more than 325 M today just taking in account inflation.

That is true. But I think that Manny, great as he is, is not the equivalent of ARod relative to his peers. With young guys dominating MLB right now, Manny is in the top tier, but not head and shoulders above the others as ARod was at the time. Plus, I think the Rangers' experience with ARod would probably deter a team from giving out a similar contract (adjusted for salary inflation, as you say).
