I agree with Moose et al about small sample size. We heard the “corner has been turned” several times regarding Gausman. BUT, if the Braves fix Gausman then the Orioles have to purge everyone and anyone associated with his development and coaching. And for gods sake don’t retain Buck. I’m very skeptical of Buck’s work with young starters.

Gausman is not fixed. Gausman was not broken. Bundy is a physical mess.

Yes, we will see.    I’ll say this: in his career, Gausman has a .284 BAA, .808 OPSA with the bases empty, .248 BAA, .700 OPSA with runners on.   So, it’s entirely possible that pitching out of the stretch all the time will help him.

And pitching against another pitcher. And defensive minded catchers.

Nothing helps a pitcher like getting out of the American League East.

Cop out.  We can't just throw up our arms and go "Ah!!! It's the AL East!!!" whenever things get tough.

Anyone we bring up is going to have to survive in the AL East.  It's a reality that we've got to deal with.

Plus if Gausman is so good like people are making it out to be, he should have thrived in the AL East.   He should thrive no matter what.

Might be a cop out for some. Chris Archer's ERA in his Ray's career was under 3.00 vs. teams outside the AL East and over 5.00 in the AL East. A lot of runs get scored in the AL East.

Why do we always dump pitchers who "get it" somewhere else? Gausman is a young guy with a big arm and we don't even have anyone like him in our system...Yes, he didn't deliver for us consistently. But we always seem to lack the people to help make the adjustments for our pitchers. That, to me, is no coincidence.

Preach it, Roy.  I don't think Gausman does any better than he was here but still.  It's annoying.

I doubt it. Have you already forgotten his gems for us earlier this year, including his 9 IP shutout?

So how do you explain Hellickson with a mid 3 era this year and Miley at 2.10? Yes SSS for both and their peripherals suck and they will regress BUT neither guy looked like a major league pitcher with us. This is a routine occurrence. It is fairly obvious Buck and his pitching coaches are not helping pitchers.

Would've kept Gausman and hired a real pitching coach and replaced Buck with basically anyone. Pretty much guarantee he would've had more value.

Moose...he already has!  I watched last nights game. He was a different pitcher than we had.

Roy, I love ya man but it's one start.  Let's see how he finishes up the year.  And if he's dominating next season, I'll believe it.  He threw some gems while he was here, I am not ignorant of that.  It was just followed by a bad start or a start where he was cruising and then imploded.

What, a real coach like Mazzone?  That guy was a fraud.

I agree with you. And actually Hellickson's and Miley's peripherals are both decent. Miley will regress obviously, but both have looked good.

    • So what is the real story on his defense? Because if he's playable at 3B, there is a spot for him to play. Mateo has been seeing his numbers slide down of late (notwithstanding the homer and triple this week). And while Urias had that surge, he seems to be trailing off again as well.  Now, if he's just not playable at 3B defensively, that's a different story and we are in a position where he gets the Kjerstad/Stowers treatment with very limited playing time.
    • Elias has a plan and he's sticking to it. However, the UCL explosions in our arms are definitely his first unforeseen, unplanned bump in the road. A lot of teams are going through this right now. In my opinion, reading the tea leaves, I felt he was trying "catch up" in the early years of the rebuild by going hard after top position talent in the draft. At the same time, he was using trades to catch up on pitching. He wasn't doing a bad job addressing pitching, but in order to "catch up," drafting top positional talent was smart. Someone said it earlier in this thread, its easier to hit on position players and they're less volatile The O's brass were not disregarding their pitching plan, but they were trying also keep pace by introducing better player development, analytics, and tech. They were drafting "sleeper arms" in the later rounds of the draft while also quietly acquiring a lot of depth and talent in the international market. Last years draft was the 1st one that I felt Elias had a focus on drafting better pitching talent. He's a guy that I believe will use his high picks on "best player" available typically, but moving forward, the positional depth allows them to slot more pitchers at the top of their draft list. In a perfect world, Elias has none of these injuries to deal with and we appear as a Mega pitching program bc we have plenty of starter depth at the MLB level. Last years draft, along with a bunch of DSL arms that have started to creep into A-/A+ give us some good lower level depth. Again, w/o the injuries, we can hide the fact that we are VERY thin at the AA/AAA levels. In 2026, the international depth and the recent drafts depth would have probably met in a perfect storm of talent on the MLB roster, and he'd really look like a genius. But losing Bautista, Bradish, Means, Wells to UCL/TJs, and also having Columbe and Kremer miss time with injuries exposes that gap in our system's pitching depth that Elias was hoping to hide for another season or two.
    • “And now in late June, it's coming unglued.” Literally right there in your post.
    • Do you think AAA in 2024 is the same as it was in 2022?
    • I’m taking the over even if he gets called up THIS WEEK
    • Once again, the O’s have done so well over the past few seasons, people forget what it’s like to have a losing streak. The Dodgers lost five in a row earlier this season. It’s doubtful that their fans think the sky is falling.    Nobody likes to lose games but the bright side is, it seems to be at the right time because the Yankees are struggling too.
    • Nice to see him hitting well and obviously healthy. Plus he's showing a little extra base pop which was something that was always missing from him in pro ball. Certainly worth keeping an eye on him and seeing how fast they will get him to more age appropriate players in AA.
