Catching

With young pitchers that the O's will hopefully use next season, you generally want the pitchers to be able to rely on the catchers.

Heck, even a guy like Scherzer was still working in partnership with Suzuki in their most recent playoff game.  It's not just the call of what pitch, it's the location of that pitch.  Yes, the pitcher is ultimately the boss, but the catcher's a part of the decision-making process.

I'm not arguing that the catcher isn't part of the process.

I have to laugh, and remember the scene out of "Major Leagues" when Charlie Sheen shakes off the catcher's call, and the catcher told the batter, what to expect.

Teaching his pitcher a lesson in whose' the boss. :) :) :)

That also happens more than once in Bull Durham

  • Crash Davis [Mechanized bull noises in background]  Well, he really hit the shit outta that one, didn't he?

    [laughs]

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh [softly, infuriated]  I held it like an egg.

Crash Davis Yeah, and he scrambled the son of a bitch. Look at that, he hit the fucking bull! Guy gets a free steak!

    [laughs]

Crash Davis You having fun yet?

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh Oh, yeah. Havin' a blast.

    Crash Davis Good.

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh [pause]  God, that sucker teed off on that like he knew I was gonna throw a fastball!

    Crash Davis He did know.

    Ebby Calvin LaLoosh How?

    Crash Davis I told him.

Crash Davis Oh, hey, and another thing, Meat. You don't know shit, all right? If you wanna make it to the bigs, you'll listen to me. Annie only wants you so she can boss you around, got it? So relax! Let's have some fun out here! This game's fun, OK? Fun goddamnit. And don't hold the ball so hard, OK? It's an egg. Hold it like an egg.

Isn’t that a scene from Bull Durham?

Yes. He needs to know what is coming so he can catch/block it.

Also until they fix the umpires, he can steal a couple stikes. Mostly I see them stabbing at strikes and making them balls.

Cumberland got demoted to A+ last year. I don’t see him starting in AAA. I think he starts in AA.

Wynns should get DFAd IMO to save a 40 man spot.

I don’t think Cumberland got demoted.    He got hurt and rehabbed for about two weeks I n A+ before returning to Bowie.

I’m pretty sure I read in the minors that it wasn’t just for injury. Either way something bothered him last year, most likely injury, because he only played in 60 games.

We might be a little thinner at organizational C depth than we know right now... Sisco at 3rd?  Cumberland might just be a 1B/DH type. But it’s not so bad because we just need placeholders till AR is ready.

Also a guy like Spencer Kieboom just cleared waivers with ease. I think Wynns would clear just as easy.

He will be designated as soon as someone better is available, but that can be literally said of everybody on our roster. Everybody on anybody’s roster, for that matter.

    • If the bolded is true, they are most likely talking to someone (if not Gunnar - Adley). Rubenstein is no idiot (like John Angelos was). He knows that the long term viability from a business standpoint is not in allowing #35 and #2 get away and go elsewhere. For those who have been to games this season, it is clear to see from all of those jerseys around the stadium who the fans have fallen in love with. Extensions are standard operating procedure in MLB currently (even for the lowest budget teams not name Athletics). The Orioles under JA were operating as an outlier. That trend is very unlikely to continue under Rubenstien. He appears to care too much to allow that to happen. IMO the Orioles must retain at least one of Gunnar or Adley AND others if they want to grow their fanbase in the market. You have to have a face or 2 of the franchise to sell and for people to continue to come see and fall in love with. Long gone are the days when people are simply loyal to institutions.
    • Oriole doctors told him they will re-examine him in 2 weeks...and if the X-rays are encouraging, he could start a rehab assignment and could be back playing for Norfolk..mid June...instead of Mid July.               Coby is not in any pain, but the rib has to heal. Remember, Bellinger had two broken ribs, and began playing after just 2 weeks. I think we could see Mayo , assuming he's hitting again, with the Orioles in June.Elias told Coby that it was just a matter of days before he was brought to Baltimore..and then that same day, with Elias in the stands...Coby chased a pop up, fell into the dugout and broke a rib...really bad luck..
    • Jorge is a speeding bullet, Gunnar is runaway freight train.
    • I think Baumann is the better pitcher than Perez...I guess they need the lefty..but Baumann, when he's decent can go extended innings too...I hope he clears waivers,,,but he wont be. He might even start for someone someday...
    • Big picture - there has been a lot of concern expressed on this board that Elias will hoard marginal players like McKenna and Bauman at the expense of team competitiveness. Whether or not you agree on the specifics of the move, it should assuage any such hoarding concerns.
    • Yeah, I assume they've been looking at the data closely. I would have preferred Perez being DFA'd but I put my reasoning why he's probably not the one to go in a post above, even if I think it was a bad reason.
    • For two years we talked about 7+ run leads possibly not being Baumann proof. I probably would have DFA'd Perez first, but I don't fault them here. They needed to get rid of someone and he was one of the two least reliable options out of the pen. I guess Perez got the LHP hard thrower advantage, even though he's not good.
