I am not banking on Diaz right now, but if he out-performs someone on this list, then great.

I would guess at least one of Nunez and Mancini will be traded by 2022, maybe both.

Keep in mind that Iglesias has been hot for a short stretch in a weird, short season.  I'm just not willing to forgive a bad return in the Villar trade because Iglesias and Alberto are far exceeding their career norms over a short period of time.  I'm more pissed about Mountcastle right now anyway.

I’m not even referring to Iglesias hot start at the plate. 

I do think his glove at SS is far superior to Villar at SS. Alberto had a good season in 19 and deserved a chance to play everyday at his best position. With Villar the fact that no contender wanted him bad enough to give up much says something. I did like watching him play, not saying that.

Mountcastle is one thing most fans agree on.

I think this is possible. Nunez has a bit more value now that there is a DH in both leagues and if he can show any ability in the field that helps. As for Mancini, I'm not sure I expect much from him in 2021 (at least in the first couple months). I know he will do everything he can to be ready, but he's going through a ton and it'll take him a while to get back to where he was physically. Plus with all the time away and questions about what he will be able to do to prepare for next year depending on how long this pandemic goes on. Mancini may be gone prior to 2022, but there are certainly complications there.

Praying that health gives the opportunity - 2022 Mancini in black ink of my Goal Seek lineup somewhere.  That's Willis Reed right there, as life has dealt out the circumstances.  Let's just call him the DH.

Kjerstad, Mountcastle, Hays, Santander seem a pretty plain Core Four for the 1B/OF half.

Adley, Rio, Hanser and Miguel Tejada: The Next Generation for the C/IF half.

Today it feels like there's a fairly steep tier drop between those Starting Nine, and anyone else on hand in the org.  Yusniel a credible 10th hitter if Mancini ill, or Kjerstad gets the Mountcastle Treatment.  Figure the teenage infielders push Rio/Hanser as the Rutschman teams crest.

His history with Elias and standing as the youngest of 2022's SS group make Correa the early favorite in my mind for the future Oriole if I had to pick one, but the more germane thing is the rest of the org's readiness for some star shortstop by 15 months from now.

 I need to see Hays more than he has to count him as a core. I wanted to draft a SS/CF guy (the guy SD drafted) to be our future CF and leadoff hitter

DH Nunez: will be interesting to see what his 60 game totals will be. 

1B Sisco: if the bat and the patience keeps up, I'd be curious to see how he could be at 1B. 

LF Mountcastle: Hoping he can be average out in left so the bat will play

CF Hayes: Looks good defensively. Excited to see if he can regain some of last year's momentum. 

RF: Santander: Keep it up big guy

 

I still am intrigued by Diaz and Mancini. And am curious if Kjerstad will be able to break in by then.

He's looked good in spurts but I was not with the pack that thought he had definitively turned a corner with his big fall last season.

So you don't see any of these players on the team in 2022?

Anthony Santander- 25 years old, not a free agent until 2025, leading the AL in RBIs while playing +defense.

Renato Nunez- 26 years old, not a free agent until 2025, coming off a 31-homer season, currently has a 133 OPS+

Austin Hays- 25 years old, not a free agent until 2026, just getting his first real crack at the majors.

 Trey Mancini- 27 years old, not a free agent until 2023, coming off a 35 Homer/.899 OPS season.  Arguably the team leader and most popular player in the organization.

Just as it was unwise to think Hays' .947 OPS last year was particularly meaningful, it is just as unwise to think his .519 so far this year is.

He has a .835 in the minors.  From my perspective I think that means we can have hope he'll hit well enough to be a major league center fielder if healthy.  Health has to be one of his primary concerns, as much as performance.  And of course the two are tied together to at least some extent.

I think he probably will, too.  But he has the profile of an Oriole prospect: Adam Jones' plate discipline.  That can work out, but he's going to have to hit almost .300 to have a good OBP.  In today's game hitting .300 is like hitting .325 10 years ago.
