Who gets protected from the Rule 5 draft?

Bannon defensively is a better 2B than 3B.   If Elias is going to replace Ruiz I doubt its with Bannon.  I think Bannon begins 2021 at Norfolk if the Tides as playing at that point.

My question on Wells is does any team draft a guy with an 80's fastball from AA and expect them to stay on the 26 man roster all season.  Its different for the O's because they can call him up and send him down as needed.

I think if Elias does take someone in the rule 5, it will most likely be a 3B. I’d like to see Bannon now, though, and Mackenna, too( Although yes, I know, where do we play him)

Regarding Wells, time to see what he can do. Pair him with Scott as opener and Follower. Can’t get much more contrasting than 97” don’t know where it’s going” and 80 and exactly where you want it.

Seriously, though, keep Wells.  Lots of guys we can dump and forget within minutes we ever even had them.

Excellent list. I would like to find a way to protect Wells. I think Rio could be gone and replaced with a free agent.

There is chance Nunez or Mancini could be traded or nontendered. I would also list Fulmer, Lopez, and Eshelman as potential expendables. I hate to say it, Valdez should be on that list too.

Mancini?  Why would anyone trade for him right now?  Why would the orioles non-tender a player they can just put on the 60 day DL if he is not ready?

Also, aside, I would have some serious problems with the Orioles non-tendering a player fighting cancer.  The steelers kept Shazier on the roster for 3 years and paid him his money.

And Nunez has increased all his rate stats and has a 117 wRC+.  He might be traded, he will not be non-tendered.

I think going into next year you may see the orioles start to transition to the competitive portion of this rebuild, so I would expect the roster crunch will get even tougher.

Agree on Nunez. Too cheap and has value to someone. Depending on how Mountcastle is viewed I would think Nunez is retained until Mancini’s health becomes clear.

You would non tender the player so you wouldn't have to pay him.

I said "traded or nontendered". Nunez would be more likely to be traded, Mancini to be nontendered. Mancini could also be traded midseason once he shows he is back to form which might open up a spot for Diaz.

Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating nontendering Mancini but he was due $5M this year and is a huge question mark. Hopefully they can come to terms in a mutually beneficial deal. Still, it is a possibility and makes a fair amount of sense from a purely financial standpoint.

Even as tone deaf as the O's have been/are, I can't see them nontendering a player with cancer.  Especially after their publicity campaign in support of him.  I would expect an incentive laden 1 year deal.  Which technically might require him to be nontendered before signing him. Does Wells need to be protected if he is on the 60 IL?

A lot posters are thinking/hoping that Davis will not be on the 40 man roster.  What happens if Davis is not on the 40 man?  Is it like he was DFA'ed?  I can't see any team claiming Davis even if its only for mlb minimum.

Another team can pay him league minimum and the Orioles pay the rest.  Just like when they picked up Tony Bautista.

Elias picked up 57 UTI guys in the span of a few months.  These guys are always available.

No need to possibly lose a young piece to keep any of those guys.  They are a dime a dozen.

True. We do this every year and it seems like we actually have a 40 man crunch. Doesn’t look like this is the actual year for that crunch. Maybe next offseason.

It is why some trades likely need to be made.  You don’t want to lose talented assets for nothing.

Im not sure what future Alex Wells has. Maybe all he ever will be is a left handed Eshelman.  Ok but I want to find that out and I don’t want him exposed just so we can keep the 26th man on the roster protected.  That is non sensical to me.

Roch weighs in today that Davis will probably stay on the 40 man roster this winter because of possible reductions in his remaining 46m salary due to COVID or labor contract problem shortening the next two seasons.

https://www.masnsports.com/school-of-roch/2020/09/examining-the-chris-davis-situation.html

If that is true someone would have to come off the 40 man to make room for Davis.  My guess is Eshelman, Kohl Stewart, Fulmer or Wells.   I think the best think to do is to see how the season plays out before making that decision.  So I am not adjusting the roster in this thread now.   Let wait as see.

Roch mentioned a possible non-tender of Núñez. I don’t like that idea at all. All he’s done since being an Oriole is hit above league average. Mancini, Mountcastle, Valaika have the ability to play first. I would be very pissed if Davis prevents the O’s from keeping a solid offensive piece in Núñez. And he’s only 26.
