@Philip?  Rickie Martin is a balladeer.

Kind of like Mancini vs the more "aesthetically pleasing" Joey Rickard?  Mancini mashes and is a fly catcher!  Joey patrols the grassy environs neatly but doesn't hit a lick.  ⚾ (emoticon for wet humor)

I am not a paying member here, and I cannot edit my comments. Yes I am aware of both the typo and the difference between Ricky and Richie. But Tim Beckham is one of the most infuriating people I’ve ever watched play baseball. I would rather watch Martin defend even if it means watching him hit, Then watch Beckham hit at the cost of watching him defend.

Martin has a hopeful future. Beckham offers nothing but aggravation.

Manny is a steadier performer.  His defense provides a lot of value even when he’s not hitting.   He’s having a pretty pedestrian offensive season for him (119 OPS+) but is still on pace for 6 WAR thanks to his defense.

As to Harper, he walks a ridiculous amount so you can’t look only at his BA.    He’s got a .370 OBP and is on pace for 28 homers and 100 RBI.     And, he’s capable of going on an insane tear at any time.   So, I wouldn’t worry too much about him just yet.

Harper's problem is that he's 26 and he has old player's skills.  Over his past 900 PAs he's hit .243, and he's a corner outfielder.  If he loses another step the only place to go is 1B/DH.  And he's not DHing since he's signed up to play in the NL until the end of time at $27M a season.

He may end up being the reason the NL finally accepts the DH.

Martin is 24.  I don't think he has that much of a hopeful future. There was a reason the A's didn't protect him even though he hit pretty well last season.

    • That's way too many major league players for us to give up. We still need to field a major league team this year.
    • I think definitely Burnes and Kimbrel. I could see Grayson either way. I would understand the argument that he’s not deserving but then again he’s got 10 wins (which I’m sure managers still put emphasis on).
    • No way Seattle gives up on Kirby for anything shy of someone like Gunnar or adley. He’s an all star caliber starter with multiple years of cheap control. This offer wouldn’t even come close. Especially since they are a playoff caliber team trying to improve now and not build for the future.
    • Moving Urias so Mayo could play two days a week isn't the best choice for his overall progress. I'd rather he stay in Norfolk until he can play five days a week. I like seeing him putting up numbers there, knowing he is a regular for us next year or maybe after the trade deadline.
    • Civale had a sub 4 era in 2022 and 2023, with a similar fip to suggest it wasn’t just luck. If you think that’s who he is rather than this 2024 version, then a lottery ticket international player in a ball seems like a worth while price to see if you can get him back to prior year form. Sure, bencosme or however you spell it would be fine too, but for a guy who has a legitimate chance to help us down the stretch for a guy who may have a 30% chance of ever making the majors?   Right now we’re relying on Irvin to rebound, Suarez to hold up, and kremer to be the back end of our rotation. Not sure how cobble is somehow a downgrade on them giving us important innings. Again, for the price, that’s an upside trade I’d make all day.
    • Considering what we saw of them offensively, who says no first? O's get Kirby and a low level prospect Seattle gets Mountcastle, Kjerstad, McDermott, Norby, Urias, Hays, and some Cash to offset cost of Hays/Urias? Not sure Mariners bite w/o a Westburg or Cowser in the deal, but I feel they need MLB ready offense. Hoping Hays or Urias can return to form with steady playing time, but if not, the cash offsets it if they want to cut them later. I'm excited to watch their other arms this series too. If Kirby is their highest regarded arm, then they probably won't move him, but if one of their other arms looks appealing, I think Elias may try to swing a deal while he's in town.  I feel the O's and Mariners match up well
    • 1. I’m not so sure it is a sell high move. O’Hearn’s statcast numbers are great. He takes good at bats and hits the ball hard. Nothing about his improvement has been fluky.  2. I’m not denying a trade could be beneficial. I’m just saying if the choice for playing time right now is between Kjerstad and Mayo, I’ll take Mayo because I think the Orioles are better with: Mayo taking Urias/Mateo at bats than Kjerstad taking O’Hearn/Santander/Cowser/Mullins/Hays at bats.
