You’re assuming he’s tried to build one.  But exactly how many times did we not have a below average bullpen between 1998-2011?

It's HARD to find a good SS without spending significant assets.  It is comparatively easy to find a BP arm without spending significant assets.

I think they could have done better in the last two years or so of rooting through that waiver wire, rule 5, etc, to get a few better arms.

And they are easy to flip.

He has had two off seasons, if he hasn't tried to build a bullpen he should probably be fired.

I see this a lot.  "Its okay the Orioles are terrible because Elias has tried to make [insert aspect of team] better."

Its a pretty lazy team building.  The GM should always try and build more talent into the system and that doesn't always take free agent signings.

While its great he has built a top farm system we also need to acknowledge that Elias has been fairly terrible at identifying additional talent.

Maybe Wells, maybe Urias, maybe Mateo.  Not much there.

I don’t think he’s been terrible. Was he actually trying to build a ML team? The three you mentioned were two waiver claims and a rule 5 pick. Waiver claims are another team’s trash that they were unable to trade. His rule 5 track record is not too great, but injuries to Martin make the grade incomplete just yet. The two pitchers in 2020 and Sceroler in 2021 were just not worthy.

He did sign Iglesias, Galvis and Franco to FA deals. Iglesias was fantastic and Elias traded him since his value will not ever be higher. Galvis was pretty good before the injury, and he traded him for a low end bullpen minor league arm. Franco looked about 50 years old most of the year, but most thought he would be a slight improvement over Ruiz.

He signed Matt Harvey, who has been up and down, sure. But he has been a good cheap veteran addition. A role model for the young guys to see what a real pro looks like in his routine and the way he prepares and competes. Tommy Milone worked out pretty good as well. He got bargain basement performance for bargain basement prices.

Severino was a waiver claim, and yes, he’s been maddening often. Some good, some bad. Rio Ruiz was the same. Both were solid claims though. Hanser Alberto was not a bad claim either.

I am sure I am forgetting other acquisitions, but it isn’t a bad list. It is what it is. A rebuild. He was open about it the entire time. He was not going to sink resources into the ML team for the first few years. I think this coming year is when it begins to change. Maybe I am wrong, but to judge Elias on his talent acquisitions is premature in my opinion.

Ellas and Hyde gotta go? Go where? OK, to paraphrase Ghost Busters- "Who ya goin call?"

With this ownership? Really?  - "Who ya goin call?"

I'm getting use to this "stress free environment!"  Wake me next year (if you can) and we will analyze and talk.?

I think we all know who has to go to give this rebuild a good chance to work. Most of us, anyhow.

Thats all Tampa Bay appeared to do, besides the guys they had in the system already.

    • He's not even in the Orioles MVP conversation. That's Gunnar by a landslide (especially if you "apples to apples" ignore Gunnar's defensive slump). I am a huge fan but I also recognize we have a pipeline of talent ready for OF/DH. Give him a QO and see where the negotiations go.
    • I also think 2 of the Yankees 4 best hitters are LHH. Basically half of Yankees offense. Talking about Wells and Soto.
    • Hopefully he’s playing himself into a QO and turning it down.
    • Also make the Nationals (MLB low 86 HR on the season) the opponent. Drew French is going to tell him something other than pump them in cookies and see if anyone can beat Walltimore in the upcoming 5 days....I think.
    • I’ve got to counter that and say that Aaron Judge also got off to a slow start, and he’s by far and away the leader in the MVP race.  I love Santander, but you aren’t winning the MVP with a .700 OPS through the first two months of the season.  He plays the game very well, has improved his defense and is an important part of our team.  But, he’s not an MVP level player.  He’s very good, and we know he can go on ridiculous hot stretches. I play super deep 30 team fantasy baseball leagues and since May, I have not lost an offensive week because I have Judge and Santander.  So I know very well how hot he can get since I see it every day- and am likely to win some good money this year because of it.  At least to me, It’s pretty clear that the team is planning for Santander to walk in free agency.  With Kjerstad/Mayo/O’Hearn/Mountcastle still here, even if you pull Mountcastle in a trade this off-season, that’s still your daily ABs taken up for RF/1B/DH.  I thought there was a small chance we would re-sign Santander, but after they brought in Eflin and have $18m to pay him next year, I immediately went to the recent activity.  Hays was traded, rumors of Mullins/Mountcastle being on the block and now Santander’s pending FA.  Eflin’s contract is basically paid next year with Hays off the books, Santander a FA and a non-tender of Mullins (or a trade of either him or Mountcastle.)  Anthony has been a great story for us, and a great player and leader.  But the cold analytical side and financial side here is going to come into play.  I don’t see many scenarios where he is back next season.
    • Any reason you are comparing the two, other than that they are left handed? Rogers has more of a track record so he has a much higher floor than Povich. Kinda hard to tell much from their minors resumes since Rogers essentially skipped AAA, but Rogers had a much lower BB rate adding up to a higher K/BB even though he got lower K's. If Povich can turn his stuff into K's at the MLB level, Rogers might be the more effective overall pitcher.
    • Just the Gausman game to decide the series, we'll see if all Orioles hitters have the same command of spitting on that split Austin Hays was pretty pumped up about being able to do last time.
