Left field at OPACY going through a big change

It still reminds me of the fence in PNC Park but a little more extreme.

This essentially puts the left fielder on an island.  The centerfielder will not be able to run over, turn right at the corner all while trying to track a fly ball.

It will also make life difficult for the umpires.  The unnatural corner in the middle of the field will make it difficult to get a proper angle to determine if a catch was, or wasn't, made.  The sight lines from the infield will be changed dramatically.  I hope they set up cameras to pick up the nuances of these changes to help on reviews.  What's the view like from the two dugouts?  Does one manager have an advantage with a better angle than the other to ask for a review?

Even the fan sight lines will miss a spot from many places in the ballpark.   That often happens in the corners, but it is pretty rare to have a spot in the middle of the outfield that isn't visible from every single infield/baseline seat.

I suspect that the fan experience was very low on the list of considerations when they came up with this dumb idea.

Positives to this change: Makes baseball at OPACY more of an athletic competition with fielders given space to run, and hitters not being able to sit back and wait for cheap homers as much.  If teams across MLB were to do things like this it could force the game to adopt more contact and speed oriented strategies and rosters, rather than wall-to-wall Chris Davis clones.  Ballparks have long been designed to the specs of the 1920s, and players are much larger and more athletic, parks should be scaled appropriately.

Negatives: It's not how Camden Yards looked in 1992, so it's dumb and stupid and I want them to put it back.

I haven't decided.  The park is the most brilliant addition to the game in my lifetime.  I have loved it in spite of the horrible management of the team.  But the game has changed alot and this move could help.  But I will have to see some games to really accept it.  Drungo above makes the simple point that its a different look so it's dumb.  I get that.  Let's see how it plays.  

I would say the change makes OF like Mountcastle, or Stewart unplayable.  Right?  Right?

Exactly right.  The people pushing back on this are so absurd and btw, many of those people probably hate the 3 outcome sport it has become.

I like that they did it because I do want athleticism to matter, but I sure wish they moved the lower bullpen into CF. Plenty of space to do so.

The corner is stupid, and not just because it's different. It's basically a gimmick. At least there's not a pillar or a hill right in the field of play, but it's still bad.

I kinda like it. Hopefully nobody wipes out on the angle. Camden Yards is still one of the best baseball stadiums around in my opinion.

 

I suspect that the home team will adjust rather quickly.
