Will Adley Rutschman be on the Opening Day roster?

Under the new CBA, if a player finishes first or second in the Rookie of the Year voting, he gets awarded a full year of service time no matter when his team brought him up.    On the other hand, if a player who is on the roster all year finishes in the top three for ROY or the top five for MVP or Cy Young, the team is awarded an extra draft pick.   

So what do you think, is that enough incentive for the O’s to put Adley Rutschman on the Opening Day roster?

On the other hand, if they don’t, will they be incentivized to keep him down longer than they otherwise would to hurt his RoY chances and avoid him getting awarded the full year as a reward?   I sure as hell hope not.

I say yes, but it's wishcasting on my part. Rutschman is easily the best catcher in the organization and it's not even close.

Piazza won RoY in '93.  In the following 28 years, only two other catchers won, Soto '08 and Posey '10.    Rutschman is a consensus #1, but so was Franco, and the small market Rays kept him down until June.   

All that said, I would like to believe that after a contentious offseason, the worst team in baseball since 2018 (.326 over 546 games) would throw the fans a bone and put Adley on the Opening Day roster.

I put this in the lockout thread, but think it's either going to be opening day or not till like July. I'm hoping they go opening day (and maybe they'll just sign him to a contract now)

I know no team has lost a grievance but man I wouldn't want to argue that he needed to be down until July.

haha, the only "betting" I have ever actually done on sports is fantasy leagues. I am way too afraid to bet on any team I like to win. but theoretically I would take that bet

I don't think that's the argument. I think the argument is that they're allowed to under the rules

I feel like it's incredibly likely Rutschman finishes in the top three of ROY voting, so I'd like him on the roster for the whole year

Why would they wait until July?  That doesn’t make sense.

Hes either on the OD roster or up by late April/early May.

I said this in another thread but I'll repeat it here.

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out, but I think Rutschman starts on opening day for the Orioles for several reasons.

He's the #1 prospect in baseball and has already performed well in AAA. He's 24-years old and a catcher which means he won't be eligible for free agency until he'll be playing in 30 old season and for a catcher, that could be very, very old. 

Also, there is no legitimate option to be the starting catcher on the roster so even if the Orioles tried one of those Mountcastle starts to gain an extra year, it just really doesn't make sense in this situation.

Because if you bring him up too early, he wins the award and gets the service time anyway.

Count me as one who hates this new rule.  As is already apparent in the nature of these considerations, they haven't removed "manipulating" service time; they have merely altered the manipulation.

To Frobby's OP, I think with this new rule AR does start on the opening day roster.

Does anyone know where the draft pick falls?  All I've heard is draft pick.
