DL Hall 2022

I would not be surprised to see Hall end up in a bulk reliever role similar to Akin this year in in order to meet his innings limit.

Next year the expectation should be that he will claim a rotation spot along with Grayson.

What I'd like to see is a Tyler Wells situation (even if it's only 2-3 innings) with Watkins moving to a bulk reliever role. With his improved velocity and slider, I could see Watkins having some success in that role in shorter stints than his starts.

He profiles a lot like Josh Hader from the limited views I have seen.

Would you take that today, or take your chances with him in the rotation?

Hall has 4 plus pitches.  He has as much upside as anyone I've seen since I've been following the minors, with the possible exception of Bundy pre-injury.  I think using him as a reliever or in 2-3 inning stints is fine this year if they want to limit his inning, but long term he should be looked at as a starter until he shows he can't do it.

I'm 100 percent behind him eventually being tried as a starter at the big league level. He could certainly be a Josh Hader type, but he has the four pitch mix of a starter. Whether he can maintain that to 100 pitches would be what I'd want to know, but if he can, he's got TOR stuff.

I agree. I think there's a small chance they will call Hall up at the same time as Rutschman and put Hall in the pen, but on a schedule.

My impressions after 3 innings.  Fastball was consistently 97 mph all 3 innings.  No one could really barrel it up. In fact, not one ball was really hit hard. He mixed the change, slider and curve and was inconsistent with the slider.  All looked good, not great.   I really wanted to see him use his fastball more to get ahead but it looked like he and Adley were looking to mix it up early.

It's only one start, but I found him more impressive than GRod the other night. Rooting for both.

I like his stuff more than Grayson, I'll just say it haha. I think they both will be very good.

I think most people like his stuff more than Grayson.  It’s the command and health that has separated them.

Most have said Hall has the higher upside though.

I think most of those takes were before Grayson added a couple of ticks of velocity and refined his change.

I'd say the stuff is closer now.

I’d agree.   I think Hall has the more lively fastball, even if Grayson can match his velocity.   What Grayson has is the ability to command all four of his pitches, especially that devastating changeup.

So today in the first 2 innings he hit two batters, walked a couple, gave up two lead-off first-pitch hits, now a WP to score a runner.

He got out of a jam in the 1st by striking them out with the fastball and has had his changeup working.  But I believe his slider is way off - too low and not inducing swing-and-miss, and often too far inside to right-handed hitters.

He also got rattled a bit by the two time-infraction called strikes, I'm sure.

The third inning he was back to making the hitters look silly.

I have to keep reminding myself that the minor leagues are about player development, not necessarily winning games.  I heard a former major leaguer describing it that way the other day too, where your focus is far more on your own numbers and improvement than on helping to win games.  I always had to remind/be reminded by weams of that; he had a hard time following the minor leaguers when we first met, because of this.
