Kyle Stowers called up

Dave Johnson had it wrong on the postgame saying Stowers got a fastball.    I went back to the Savant box, which classified it as a curveball.

Hendriks relies on 3 pitches.

4-Seam Fastball

(60.1%)

Slider

(28.3%)

Curveball

(11.6%)

It was Hendriks third pitch, and he hung it.    We lucked out, I'm sure it was meant to be in the dirt.

A bunch more curveballs will be coming from McCullers tonight.

Ehh... Scott struck out in 20.7% of PAs, and less than 20% in AAA.  Stowers was at 25.5% in AAA this year.  So, Luke Scott minus 20 points of BA?

Strikeouts are up about 20% since Scott played.   So, your comparison is fair in terms of raw numbers but Scott’s numbers wouid have more value today.   Stowers is less of a platoon guy and should be a better defender.   He’s also 3 years younger than Scott was when he reached the majors.

What an awful answer by Hyde.

If as Hyde said they are trying to win games, then why does he keep putting in Hall in high leverage situations? The game was not out of reach when he came in? I know he is considered the Orioles second best pitching prospect  but he is relieving ,something he has never done before. Plus he has had control issues, etc.

Yeah it was a curious move for me also.  I almost think you have to treat each game as a must win and probably would of burnt one of our better bullpen gunslingers in that situation to try to get out of the inning.   Like even Tate or Perez.  Not Bautista of course.   Sometimes the biggest moments of a game are not always in the 7-9 innings.

Sure Hall is a huge K guy but like you said he is wild.  He has not been pitching great even at AAA this year.  It was a curious move.

They aren't actually high leverage.

Down 2, bases loaded no outs in the 4th.

That ain't high leverage.

You know I am not at all convinced the reasoning is trying to win games.  I have a suspicion that they wanted to get Hays more chances to boost his potential trade value.   If we had just cut his playing time dramatically we leave his stats just like they are.   Not good.   If he had turned it on we could sell him a little higher.   I know its a little bit conspiritorial but I think might be playing a role.

In the fourth ,against a pitcher with an ERA over five pitching against you? Also a team offensively challenged. 3-0 in the top of the fourth is not an insurmountable lead.

But didn't understand why they brought Hall up for one game to start because they wanted to get his feet wet. Then sent back down to learn to relieve.

While Hyde's answer was brutal, it was honest because he is doing the best he can to win games in a playoff race, for him, the fat lady doesn't sing until mathematical elimination. He isn't playing the rookies to improve their performance in 2023. I doubt ME is instructing Hyde to do that at any level.

I don't think anyone would have an issue with the answer if the moves he was making actually were helping.

Batting Hays leadoff, Mullins 8th, playing Aguilar, sitting Stowers, burying Vavra...none of these moves in my mind seem to maximize winning this year.  And I'm not saying Stowers or Vavra are going to be significant difference-makers, they may not be, but they should be playing more, not just for next year but for this year.

I've got no idea why they brought up Hall for one start, on the road, without Adley catching.

Seems like it was a move destined to end poorly for Hall.
