This lineup frustrates me because you are taking a good defender and putting them at DH, and putting a bad defender in the field. I also think it's problematic for Henderson's development to be playing him at DH often, and it speaks to Hyde's distrust of young players in general, and specifically on defense.

That said, if this  is Hyde's "a" lineup (in his mind) then Henderson should be getting reps in RF, so that at least you can put Henderson somewhere in the field and take out Santander (since he clearly feels like Urias and Fraier are the better IF defenders)

This lineup frustrates me as well. Playing Henderson at DH with any regularity seems like a diservice to his development as a complete player. And if we're being honest, the development of Henderson is much more important to this franchise than going out of the way to get Mateo and Urias more at bats. I also hate the idea of trying to turn Henderson into an OF.

You have good defenders at 3B, SS, and 2B.    No big deal.     If Gunner has to DH once a week, again no big deal.

Agreed. Mateo is red hot, he deserves to keep starting. That means Urias and Gunnar split 3B. Gunnar should get the majority but he also had a minor injury so the extra rest is not a bad thing.

The issue isn't the defenders at 3b, ss, and 2b, it's the one in RF. Assuming those are the guys Hyde wants in the lineup, you have to move the defensive arrangement around (I'd put Frazier in RF but I'm accounting for Hyde's biases)

Most players don't like to DH. If they don't do it regularly it can kill their feel of the game. Why would you take a good all around young player out of the lineup and risk messing with his feel of the game? It's just bad call by Hyde early on (one of many). I'm fine with riding Mateo's hot streak, but they should be DHing Urias or Frazier, not Henderson.

That's on management for wasting a FA signing on a 2B rather than signing an OF (if they weren't comfortable going with one of the young guys). I watched most of the Rockies game yesterday and Profar looked absolutely incredible in the OF. Made at least three good to great plays and is a much better defender than I expected. In hindsight, they would have been better off signing someone like Profar than Frazier.

I would have Gunnar planted on third base 5 days out of 7. Day 6 he plays SS for Mateo to rest and then let Gunnar rest on the 7th day. Urias and Frazier can split 2B with Urias playing third one day for Gunnar and maybe spelling Mateo another day.

We're not all about just development anymore.  We are trying to win and Urias is probably a better defensive 3B than Gunnar.

Gunnar missed one game with an injury.  In the other 6 games, he's played 3rd 3 times, SS once, and DH'd twice.   With Mateo hitting well, that's fine with me.   The fact is we have a 3Bman who is probably better defensively at 3B than Gunnar, and a shortstop who is probably better defensively at SS than Gunnar, even though Gunnar is probably pretty good at both positions.   Nice problem to have.   But Gunnar at DH might be the optimal offense/defense lineup combination a couple times a week.

Yes, and that’s because the O’s probably have the best defensive third baseman and shortstop in the American League.  I wonder if they have considered playing Gunnar at second base?  He played 26 innings at second with the O’s last year and looked pretty good.  Not to mention he has a cannon of an arm for turning double plays.

They should be DHing Santander at least 50% of the time and rotating Henderson, Urias, Adley. Frazier, Stowers.

Agree with this. It also seems so bizarre that Hyde is so focused on playing what he thinks is the best defense lineup in the infield, but doesn't take the same approach in the OF. I just don't understand his rationale or what he's trying to accomplish with some of these lineups.

While I agree with Tony@OH that Sig's computer spits out who should play in a given game matchup, I suspect that Hyder decides, or at least has the latitude to decide, who plays where. Sig's computer isn't going to spit out Stowers, Vavra, or even Henderson over anyone with a MLB track record. IMHO 😬

I don't know that Gunnar converts that DP today as often as Urias does. For the long run, we need Gunnar on the field. But if you're playing to win this one game, I like today's lineup, and I can see Hyde playing the home opener that way. It's telling that this is the same set of guys he ran opening day, only swapping Hays and Frazier in the lineup.

I can see why you wouldn't want your current and future centerpiece player on the field for opening day.

Makes a lot of sense.

    • ??? The only sports where people peak younger than 20 is stuff like womens gymnastics and figure skating, where women have to delay puberty in order to maintain a body type ideal for the sport.  Nearly every other sport's athletes between 22-27.
    • Ok several of you want to compare JH to Gunnar.  I am happy to do so: JH is 20 years old and has a .909 OPS at AAA after putting up a .941 OPS as a 19 year old at four levels. As a 20 year old Gunnar had a .826 OPS across three levels, .944 at A, .775 at A+ and .561 at AA (5 games) Even at 21 Gunnar went back to AA for almost half a season and his OPS at AA was .894 I am not saying JH will be as good as Gunnar but people saying we should trade for some pitcher we could have for a year or two have lost touch with common sense.
    • To be honest i wont know.  I know im in the absolute minority here but when the robo umps show up, im outa here.  Im barely hanging on now due to the recent rule changes the last few years.  Baseball and football has changed so much lately ive really lost interest.  I actually just cancelled Fubo just so i can save some money.
    • That's a good point as an OF I read swings but it's different on dirt.  I could freeze knowing my speed would make up for a poor read-no time to do that on dirt.  There was more time to think in the OF which was good and bad. To your second point- I didn't think about it until now but in my coaching experience some kids-the really good OF's were just flat out better at tracking balls than others-combination of eyesight and instincts-not sure but you brought up a good point.   JH would likely be an plus CF given what we know about him but it will take reps otherwise you're giving up outs and advances.  FWIW-Slotting JH into CF would run somewhat counter intuitive to drafting EBJ and Josenberger (who really only provide value in CF) in the last draft.
    • I understand but again a contending team is not going to trade a good pitcher for someone who can leave the team end of year.
    • First of all, pretty much everyone that wears an MLB uniform is a good enough athlete to play just about any sport to at least a d3 collegiate level, and likely d1, Holliday included.  The only exceptions would be people that have hard size limitations.  (e.g. Corbin Carroll or Jose Altuve are unlikely to be football players simply due to their size.  And Altuve isn't going to cut it in basketball for the same reason.)  But for sports like skateboarding or any swing sports like tennis or golf?  I guarantee JH could be a high level college athlete if not a pro player if he focused on them.  If you're arguing that Gunnar has athleticism/body control that's elite even among MLB standards, and Holliday doesn't.... maybe I'd agree with you?  But Gunnar is always going to have his arm tool over Holliday.  In my limited time viewing Holliday, I'd actually rate Holliday's body control to be better than Gunnar's, but a large part of that is because Gunnar is 6'4" 220, and Holliday is 6' 190.  I'd also say that Gunnar having the body control and athleticism he has given his size is pretty exceptional, so if you want to bring up his combination of size and athleticism/body control, I'd agree with you.   But you're coming off like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite, while implying that someone who's like 89th percentile sprint speed isn't an elite athlete even among other MLB players, and that is just outlandish to me.
