What about Mayo?

O'Hearn is probably a lock, but he shouldn't be. I'm not counting on him to repeat last year.

I don’t think that is unreasonable to think he will have regression   But he is going to get the chance to repeat his season. I think he is a lock to make the team. But if he has much regression there are other ways to use his at bats.

Yea I can’t see them eating his salary before the season even starts. (Well 80% of his salary)

I wouldn't be shocked to see Mayo make the OD roster and Holliday start in AAA.  If Mayo has a nice spring and Holliday doesn't - it will be interesting.

My hope coming into ST was that one of Mayo or Holliday would crack the opening day roster, we really don't have room for both right now. Even if just one makes the team, that will probably mean one of Urias or Mateo has to go.

Trade Urias for a reliever and let Mayo cook!

Oh, I have no doubt that they're going to give him 200 PA before they give up on him, I just think he's a lot more likely to be the guy we saw in Aug/Sep than he is the guy from Jun/Jul. I'd much rather give those at bats to Kjerstad or Cowser, were it my decision.

I agree entirely. Trade at a somewhat relative high. Heck, he’s a gold glover. It’s Mayo time.

This doesn’t really change your point, but I was reminded on the Sunday radio broadcast that O’Hearn actually was having a very good September (.959 OPS in 18 games) until he suddenly finished the season 0 for 23.   His OPS for the season dropped by 54 points in those final 8 games.  Ouch!

I think your assessment is correct that they will give him 200 PA before changing his usage in case of poor performance.

Coby Mayo is showing up and being consistent in Spring Training so far! He's raising his stock even higher, in my opinion.

I think there’s only so high your stock can rise in ~10 spring training PA in the first week of games.  He’s certainly getting people’s attention.

Also coming off a September in AAA where he OPS’d 1.065 at 21 years old

That’s all well and good but why does the one coming up have to be Holliday and not Mayo?  Why is Holliday more deserving?  Just because he’s the better talent?  That answer may be enough but I’m just kind of playing devils advocate here.

Mayo has more AAA time and has been a high end player for most of his MiL career.

I don’t think it has to be Holiday either. I don’t understand why Elias is so hesitant to purge the roster.

Because he’s not sure the young players will be ready to be better than the older players they’d be replacing in 2024, and he’s trying to win in 2024, with a group of guys that helped win 101 games in 2023.   It’s not like he’s replacing the guys who lost 110 games in 2019.

I’m not saying Elias shouldn’t or won’t make some changes.   I’m explaining why he’s hesitant and has kept his options open.

Why TF would you "purge" a roster that's coming off 101 wins?

Like what's the mentality behind that?
