I hope not. That role should go to Errol Robinson.

His minor league history isn't very good.  He might start or come off the bench.  Diego Castillo would be my guess for starting SS at Norfolk.

All I care about for Norfolk's starting SS is that he is the best defender for the pitchers down there. Maton and Castillo are both known more for their offense and defensive versatility. Robinson has looked fantastic all spring. Just my two cents. Doesn't really matter in the end.

It's not like he's taking AB's or playing time away from anyone who needs more

Agree to disagree here, but spring is almost over so it doesn't really matter. He's looked about as bad as you can look though. Should be DFA'd shortly.

He has started 6 games

3 of which were in February, prior to Gunnar playing, 1 of those a split squad

March 4th - 3B, could have been a Mayo start

March 11th - 3B day after Split Squad, Urias, Westburg and Mayo had all played consecutive days

March 17th - Split Squad

He's doing nothing but filling in some gaps

Look, I'm just eager for cuts and for the season to start.

I’m a little surprised Maton is still on the ST roster.   He’s 0 for 15 with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.   I guess the O’s are waiting for the right time to try to slip him past waivers.

Elias probably knows they are probably DFAing him and McKenna and will try to do it when a lot of other players are being DFA'd to give them the best chance to get through. I doubt anyone is picking up Maton, but you never know. I think he moves McKenna for a low level pitching prospects instead of losing him on waivers.

I think Castillo is going to get the most plating time at SS with Robinson sharing it as well. Overall, they will move those guys around as utility depth at the major league level.

I value that take on Mckenna.  However, here's my thinking on Mckenna getting claimed.  He's not good enough to crack a contender's 26 man roster, and doesn't have enough upside for a non contender to pick up.  I think he clears.

In fact, I think all of Mckenna, Maton, and Nevin clear.  If we also decided to just make the procedural move and retro 60 day IL Means, and Bradish, then that is 5 spots open on the 40 man.  Of course we may add Holliday, and Terehan.  But... I think we see an active Elias on the waiver wire in between the time period of end of ST and OD.

I think Elias will always be active on the waiver wire. He's a master at finding hidden talent there.

As for McKenna, perhaps he makes it through but when you see some of the guys that get claimed, you have to think someone may give him a look as a 4th outfielder against left-handed pitching.

I saw a bit of Castillo in Sarasota.  He’s very good defensively.

That might be true this spring, but I'm not sure that's his reputation as a player in the minors and majors. I've seen him described as "bat first". He's versatile, but not a guy you want out there at SS regularly.
