Setting the rotation for the four game Yankee Series

Sunday's starter for the O's is TBD.    Suarez or Means.   The choice is really about who Elias/Hyde want to start vs the Yankees.    Means may be good enough to beat the A's saving Suarez for the first game vs the Yankees.   GRod, Kremer, and Burnes could follow.

They probably don't want Irvin pitching vs the Yankees because his career OPS vs them is 924.

The other consideration is that if Bradish pitches well in Norfolk tonight he could be available to pitch vs the Yankees.   But having his first game back in the majors vs the Yankees may not be the best idea.   Pitching vs the Reds is no picnic but its probably easier than facing the Yankees.

That brings up who is in the rotation if Means and Bradish are both back.  Irvin is an easy move to the pen but that still leaves Burnes, GRod, Bradish,  Kremer and Means who are mainly starters.  Suarez has relieved in the past but how do you take a guy with a 0.00 ERA out of the rotation?

There are things yet to happen including Means, Bradish and Suarez effectiveness in their up coming starts.

I have no idea why Means is even a consideration for Sunday. He’s clearly not ready.

Means pitched 5 times for Norfolk with an ERA of 13.89.

To me, Bradish is good enough and experienced enough that I'm not super worried who his first opponent is. And I think facing the Reds in Cincy may be a tougher assignment than facing the Yankees in Camden.

Apart from Judge and Soto the Yankee offense does not scare me.

Cincinnati will probably be a tougher team to pitch against simply because of their stadium. Basically pre-wall OPACY without a scoreboard.

I disagree.

Prefer to move Irvin? Or stash Means in the bullpen? I don't have a strong feeling either way but it would make sense to back Means up with a RHP throwing 96. I don't think Suarez is going to have a 0.00 ERA forever and I like having a matchup proof guy like him or Wells in the pen.

I don't think Suarez is going to have a 0.00 ERA forever either but I want to ride this wave for as long as we can.

Well rhat answers that. Means is getting another opportunity for a tune up in Norfolk Sunday so he won't be pitching vs the Yankees. I think that is the correct decision. He needs to start in MLB against a non division opponent, preferably a team that is no better than average in the league. Then we will see what we have in John Means for 2024 at the Major League level.

    • That is a big hypothetical and I know how many of you will struggle to accept the premise.  BUT, if Mayo can handle 3B everything else could fall into place by next year.   That allows Kjerstad to take over RF when Santander leaves.  It leaves Mountcastle at 1B with Basallo in waiting.   O’Hearn to get another year at DH.  And either Westburg or Holliday at 2B.  Here’s the kicker.  Why not attempt to turn Westburg or Holliday into a CF? The Padres had no problem doing that with their #1 SS prospect.  Both Westburg (28.7) and Holliday (28.8) show better sprint speed than Merrill (28.0) or Mullins (27.7).   Merrill already has a +3 OAA so it looks to be a success so far.       This would allow the Orioles to solve one of their biggest questions.   Who succeeds Cedric and will they be ready by OD 2026? It also puts all of our top guys comfortably in one spot.  Logjam solved. 1B Basallo 2B Holliday (only because Holliday supporters get more upset than Westburg’s) SS Henderson 3B Mayo C Rutschman  LF Cowser CF Westburg RF Kjerstad DH Whoever You’re welcome!
    • Anybody notice him grimacing and flexing/shaking out his throwing hand a lot during this start? The grimacing was usually after a strikeout, so that may just be his pumped up face. But he is always inspecting his fingers (blister? callous?) and shaking out his hand. Broadcast didn't mention it and he seemed fine in the post-game and throughout the start. Just something I noticed.
    • I've watched him a few times this week against the Rays and Cards. The guy throws really hard and throws a lot of stuff that is a ball out of the hand. He walks guys and throws a lot of pitches to get through innings. I'm not sure what I'd give up for him.
    • How do you know it's Melanie, and not Ben Wagner, Geoff Arnold, or Brett Hollander.
    • Yea he was a starter and quite frankly, anything toxic coming out of that org should be taken with a huge grain of salt. It’s a disaster of an organization on every level imaginable.
    • KB mentioned during the game yesterday that he won't be in DC, so it's Melanie and Ben, such bad timing with a day off before and after the series.
    • I saw this game. I saw it in real time, and I remember thinking, after the last out,”someone better get the game ball, because NOBODY is gonna forget this game.” And just as if he read my mind, Mark Reynolds got the game ball and gave it to Chris Davis. This is a link to an article by Grant Brisbee, written the next day. Brisbee is the best sports writer I’ve ever read, and this is funny, prophetic, and a wonderful read. I share so you, too can relive one of the greatest of all Oriole Games.   https://www.sbnation.com/2012/5/7/3004252/baltimore-orioles-boston-red-sox-17-innings-chris-davis-pitching
