This is the kind of thing that drives me crazy

Did he have a big time arm?   Honest question.  I don’t think he was a mid 90’s guy when drafted and I think all of the injuries prevented him from possibly developing into that.

He sat 90-94. But he had plus movement and a wipe out curve out of high school. He was able to get mid 90s (topping 96) with the O's.

I think folks need to remember he's still only 22. But based on the injuries and since drafted out of HS back in 2020, he's approaching that 5 year mark re: 40 man roster requirement and that doesn't look too promising.

I really liked Carter Baumler. Dood has just had a plethora of injuries.

Well we know so far this approach hasn't developed major league pitching and pitchers still are on the IL all over the org.

We developed Bradish.  This current regime also put the finishes touches on Grayson, and helped him adjust after his initial callup and struggles.  They also helped Means.

We do have some success stories.

There are a bunch of success stories when it comes to acquiring other org's minor league pitchers and developing them as well as acquiring bullpen arms and tweaking things and making them better. The Elias regime has excelled on that front. It's amazing we've been able to maintain relatively solid starting pitching over the last 2+ years without drafting and developing one ourselves. So I think it's been a strategy that has worked, the question is how sustainable is it.

That said, the main point that I have (and potentially Tony's, too) is in regard to having success stories for pitchers we've drafted and developed. That's yet to come to fruition.

Players traded at the deadline and their performance:

Name G AVG OPS ERA WHIP
Austin Hays 19 254 648
Mac Horvath 27 225 661
Jackson Baumeister 6     1.13 0.625
Matthew Etzel 28 235 694
Connor Norby 13 327 1.021
Kyle Stowers 30 202 587
Trey McGough 9     2.16 0.96
Seth Johnson 5     1.52 0.845
Moises Chace 5     2.59 0.863
Billy Cook 15 276 850

*For the guys in the majors, their stats from time in the majors, otherwise it's cumulative time in the minors just with that org

That would be absolutely awful if 3 of 4 of those Pitchers went on to have solid MLB careers. Or if just two of them became good SP's.

They did more than put the finishing touches on Grayson.  He was drafted a few months before Elias was hired and had only pitched a few innings in the Gulf Coast League.  Almost all his development was during the Elias regime.

They’ve been frustratingly clandestine about it.

I don't offhand know the contract length of any of the guys at his organizational level.  I've never looked for it but if it was commonly disseminated information I think I'd know at least a couple.  My guess is this type of secrecy is standard.  You don't want everyone to know your chief guy is a lame duck.

It is frequently known.  If so, it usually shows up in Cot’s Bsseball Contracts, which provides that information for the GM and the manager if it’s public.  For example, in our division it lists Brian Cashman (NYY) as under contract through 2026, Russ Atkins (TOR) 2026, Eric Neander (TBR) 2028.  No info on Craig Breslow (BOS).

Wasn't sure of the right place to post this. Thought this was interesting in light of this discussion. No idea what is going on with the Phillies rotation at the moment.

Pretty interested to see how this goes.

Add this to the @RZNJtrail of misery.  After two short starts for AA Reading, the Phils promoted Johnson to AAA, where he has an 0.56 ERA in 3 starts.  Now the majors.

Chace and Johnson for Soto, who is pitching better but is nothing special for sure.     Unnecessary.
