I thought it was always a discussion of the big three - Holliday, Mayo, Basallo.  I was OK with one of them plus Kjerstad.  I'm glad we didn't do two.

My issue was always about the long term.  What has happened the rest of this year doesn’t change anything for me.

We'll never know and Elias/Fisher aren't telling MLB Trade Rumors.    I don't believe it ever would have been three.

Btw, something to consider here…if you made this trade, you still have Norby and Stowers..and GRod got hurt after.(which wasn’t info we had at the time)

It is a fun kicker if you could get a re-do of the Marlins trade, but I think at a maximum aggression level that would have been pleasing to competitors like Burnes/Gunnar/Adley, Elias could have pushed through to all three of Eflin, Rogers and Skubal.

I would have been happy to trade any of our top prospects. at the beginning of the season, I postulated trading Basallo for Miller. I personally Waffled back-and-forth at the time, but I probably would have done it.

Mayo, Holliday and Kjersted, sure. All three of those should have been/ should be on the block. I wouldn’t have traded all three for Skubal, but any one of them could have been a main piece in a quantity trade.

Mateo doesn’t hit well, but his defense and threat on the bases illustrates how valuable outstanding defense is, and those guys don’t have it.

I tend to doubt they go after Rogers if they have Skubal, since he was under team control for a while.

Glad he didn’t. With the way the offense has gone, it would have still been futile.

OP, my opinion is no. You rattled off the names of some players who have a good shot of having long, successful careers. With pitching, you're always one injury away from disaster.

Heck no, we can’t score runs now with 4/5 of them on the roster. 

Also, the cupboard to land a big SP replacement for Burnes via trade is bare. Unless we trade one of Mayo, Holliday, and Basallo. Or more. We need to just re-sign Burnes.

This is my thinking as well.  Who would have guessed that despite all the injuries, the Trevor Rogers fiasco and Corbin Burnes' terrible August that the most reliable part of this team would still be the starting pitching?  Eflin and Suarez have anchored a much better than expected rotation, with Kremer and Povich hanging in there despite some rough starts.  The current rotation has mostly kept us in games despite the absence of hitting and a head shaking bullpen. 

Would we be better right now with Skubal?  Probably, but not by much with so much else wrong with this team.  Plus we kept our position player future that is clearly mostly still developing.  

Perhaps we could still trade for Skubal this offseason, but with the Tigers suddenly Wild Card contenders I can't see them letting him go.  Maybe they'd trade him for a crazy package crazy like Adley, Holliday, Kjerstad and Povich.  I think that ship has sailed and maybe was never close to being a reality anyway.
