When (If EVER) Will The Orioles Get a Hitter Like This?

I'm pretty sure my wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law are pretty typical casual fans of the type who probably make up 50% or 75% of All Star voters. They all voted a straight Orioles ticket in the AL, and for whomever had the coolest names in the NL.

The typical All Star voter isn't stupid. They just don't care.

Indeed. The guy on his 11th beer or the eight year old behind the dugout...I doubt they are terribly concerned with defense.

That is not exactly what I was thinking when I was casting my vote for Ken Gerhart as a nine year old in 1987. I don't think he made the team.

Clearly they are taking his defense into account. After all, he has won multiple gold gloves. :laughlol:

I am sure he isn't the only player who got votes after he retired when they did it in the middle of the season. What the heck is so surprising about that? He had a HOF career he damn sure should have gotten some votes for that resume! GOOD GRIEF PEOPLE - GET REAL!:rolleyestf: I mean some of you act like you never heard of Willie Mays playing in his last AS game as a Met? He sure as hell didn't get there for that ONE half season. As the GEICO CAVE MAN says: if you don't know something do a little research! :eektf::rolleyestf::(

The term irony comes to mind here. :laughlol:

WE should do research? This coming from the poster who needs no research (which completely contradicts his "argument) to see that Michael Young is better than Nick Markakis, even though RESEARCH (you know, that unbiased thing called stats) show that this isn't the case.

You can't have it both ways.

P.S. I really hope I get an answer here.

Uh, you do realize that past performance is considered don't you?:confused: Also, if you think Texeira's numbers will be that bad by the end of the season you better think again or are definitely no student of the game!:scratchchinhmm:

So, past performance is not actually considered. Please respond by admitting your mistake - luckily we know you're not afraid to be wrong. Thanks in advance!

I think it's official, O5F is the boards biggest loon and it's not particularly close.

Not as looney as someone who would vote a player to the Allstar game just to see him "walk" to first base. No that is the definition of a LOON if you ask me!:rolleyes::eektf::rolleyestf:

There must at least one other contender. After all, "Old Number Five Fan" is an anagram for "Vile Bad Men Runoff." So there must be at least one other in the runoff. :)

I think his argument is that we do not, have not, and will not have a serious power hitter. Youk, Tex, Lind, and Longoria are all monsters and help their teams push our team further down the division. Beyond that they have A-Roid, Hill/Wells, V-Mart/Beltre, and Pena. Nobody on this team was likely to hit 30+HRs going into the season, nobody outside of the freakish Huff '08 season has in recent history, and there is nobody in the pipeline that is likely to do so in the future. Without a real power hitting #3 this team will not prevail. We could at least try and find a poor man's version like Burell or Blalock or the aforementioned Vlad, who fit's the description only because he signed for 5.5M. If we had got Vlad and Beltre this would have been a very different season. Instead, we got Atkins and Miggy. If we offered Beltre 4 years he might have thought about it and 5 would have got it done. Bay would have been huge as well, but probably would not have come. This coming class of free agents offer nothing that without red flags outside of Werth, who will resign with Philly. Our only hope is Weiters goes off.

Are you also going to ignore Vlad's stats in Texas, which is like hitting in Coors field?

We have no idea how Vlad would have done here.

    • I can't imagine they have any expectation of Mateo going back to being a regular. If he's going on his annual hot streak, then it's smart to ride him until he gasses out, then shift him back to his reserve role. Holliday is taking that full-time spot soon enough.
    • Urias has a career 103 OPS+. Had two hits and a walk today plus another squared up ball for an out. I feel like Urias is a bit of a forgotten man, but he is a very solid defender and an average bat. That's probably not good enough for us but that is because we are spoiled with plus guys at basically every position. I agree on Westburg though, if Mayo doesn't end up with 3B, Westburg is adequate there and so far his bat can play for a corner IF.  Hitting on Westburg and Gunnar the way we have really pushes our system over the top. These are guys we weren't necessarily counting on but they are turning into bona fide stars. Only question is how to find room for them all. Westburg 3B makes Mayo the heir apparent at 1B. Somehow he needs to push Mountcastle but he's not a FA until 2027. Maybe he takes Santander's spot and Kjerstad keeps waiting.
    • Interesting.  You know Gunnar and De La Cruz are the same age, yet Gunnar's put up 9.4 career WAR to poor Elly's 2.7.  If anyone was overrated during the last series it was Nick Lodolo.
    • I wondered about that too.  Maybe he'll take his turn on the IL when Grayson is ready to return.
    • It’s silly to be judging Bradfield at this stage.  I don’t know if he’ll be good or not, but I know you need to give him a couple of months at least before you have any clue.
    • Anyone else notice Kremer shaking his hand or fingers the last couple games and looking like he’s in pain?  I’m surprised Ben and Kevin didn’t pick up on it today.  It looked obvious to me.
    • Povich is a starter. It makes no sense to bring him up and put him in Baumann’s role. Especially not in a short term situation when he’s pitching so well starting in Norfolk.    also - it kind of feels like Baumann is just a placeholder. When wells and/or Grayson come back, there isn’t another logical move other than maybe option akin, who has pitched dramatically better than Baumann. But I can’t imagine Baumann surviving both wells and Grayson coming back without another injury.    I don’t think Elias is doing anything crazy other than holding onto assets with value until it’s necessary to let them go. Is Tate probably better in the long term? Yeah. But he’s also coming off a year long injury and they don’t want to overuse him. Let them use his option for the flexibility, manage his innings, let Baumann either prove he can rediscover early 2023 form or get dfa’d in the coming weeks while eating whatever innings we need him to. Not like he’s costing us games at the moment.
